Im not closing today - I will stay until midnight on the 9th :) When things get amended and settled - I will be back in full force - I cant afford to list new items when I cant sell what I have now and Im so new here that I dont expect to have tons of sales right away anyhow.
I'm staying open, it's like the millennium scare all over again. I personally believe the government has bigger fish to fry and with all the cutbacks and layoffs in government (I work for the government as a day job so I know first hand) that there probably won't be a lot of moolah invested in hiring people to crackdown on stay at home moms selling hair bows and part time crafters such as myself. I know morally I shouldn't be so gun-ho about breaking the law but hey it's my own decision and I know I'm not making unsafe products.
The problem is that I dont think they are looking at it as cracking down on SAHM's and crafters. I think they are thinking, "I don't want another kid getting sick from lead on my watch." Nevermind that it was never us doing anything wrong in the first place.
85% of my business falls under the CPSIA. I have already stopped wholesaling, which is half of my business.
If nothing changes between now and Feb. 9th, I will remove all my baby and children's items.
I do not intend to stop fighting and I do think things HAVE to change. I just do not think they'll change before Feb. 9th and I simply cannot afford to fight criminal charges. Emotionally and financially I can't risk it. It's not worth it.
So I'm left with 15% of my business. Ummm, yeah.... That's gonna keep us livin' high on the hog, don't you think?
I will be closing. I was on a roll too and doing well. My family depends on my little second income, but I may open another store and start over, ooor go to work a day or two a week (that's really painful as my children are little)! It's so sad, but I can't afford risking the fine and jail, and they might come after me too. Who knows?
I will be closing-this week actually. I'm trying to come up with some other ideas for adults, but I just love sewing for kids. And my shop has been doing really well lately too! :( http://loveseptember.etsy.com
Im staying open! Im looking to test locally and hopefully for cheaper! If anyone wants to split cost of testing in texas theres a local testing facility in Houston (still looking for one closer to dallas)
sugarplumbtree-you are one of my favorite shops!! Gosh-this just keeps getting worse and worse. I feel like I am going to have to spend thousands just to collect all of the handmade stuff I want my kids to have before all these shops close!
"dreamy1 dreamy1 says: Can't everyone just ignore the idiotic rules?"
Sure. I'm going to ignore the idiotic rule about speed limits. It's dumb so I don't want to obey it. I also don't want to have to pay taxes, so I'll ignore that rule too. And any other rule I disagree with, I'll just ignore it.
cuz after all, it's ALL ABOUT ME. The government is targeting ME. I'm that significant. and if I ignore the rules then it will change. I'm that important.
Look the goverment can't even get child protection service right... they don't have enough people to get them right lot along all of you all... I think this will all fade in time.. party on I say...

This law is such a shame,I was so excited to open my new store at the end of this month.I have been staying up to all hours of the morning crafting, and now all my hard work will come to nothing.Lets hope it all blows over soon.
I'm staying open. I've just started to list a line of art targeted to adults and I've ordered a bunch of undyed (yes undyed can be many pretty colors too) wool to make a new line of organic and natural kid toys. I'm just hoping that at least the law is amended to allow for that.
I'm staying open, but my plush toys will only be offered here within Canada and other countries starting Feb.10. I have started to make Cat Toys instead of childrens toys and I'm still working on some other ideas, maybe a new shop.
If we buy our material in joann, michaels, hobby lobby, etc. why the suplies are not tested before they are sold. Why goverment allow the public to buy materials with lead risk.
I think i'm safe with the things i make and sell in my shop but would anyone have the "time" or desire to check my shop out and see if i'm going to run into trouble. so far i've just stuck my head in the sand and tried to pretend that it wasn't happening....going to a happy place... =))) but i can't ignore it anymore. so please let me know if my shop will fall under the new law. thanks ahead of time for those who will do this for me.
