Re: omg help!

Focus on third party testing, parents losing their right to decide what is safe and best for our own kids. The bill was ill thought out though their hearts intentions were in the right place. Oh my I can’t type fast enough.

Re: omg help!

Um, maybe the redundant testing issue; the fact that this is not JUST toys; that products that have never been associated with lead poisoning are covered, that Congress has to change the law, OH
And if you have testing estimates, show them. The cost of testing is another issue where consumer groups keep lying to the media, saying they are being wildly exaggerated by people opposed to the law.

Re: omg help!

Make sure they KNOW that this is SO much more than just toys...

that it affects LIBRARIES, and the families that rely on Salvation Army, Goodwill, Yardsales and other sources for gently used second hand clothes and other items for kids. (In also DEEPLY impacts the programs run by the charities that raise funds through second hand stores.
SA raises the most money from the children's section of it's stores, to help support substance abuse treatment programs, help families in hard times...etc.)

ALL children's books printed before 1985.

The school fund raisers and Church bazaars where hand made things for kids are sold to raise money.

Re: omg help!

That today it's kids' products, what will it be tomorrow?
And how much business our suppliers are going to lose.

Re: omg help!

Make sure you talk about DeMints bill - how he wants to allow component supplier testing and how this will make all products just as safe as third party testing but will allow many businesses to stay afloat in this tough economy.

Re: omg help!

You'll do great. Just take a step back and everything will fall into place. Component testing at the manufacturer level for supplies is something that is being discussed. You might want to address that.

Either way, just relax and the right words will come.

Best of luck.

Re: omg help!

Ask him to consider a child's garment, and what is legal to use for closures: Buttons? Snaps? Hooks/eyes? Even if the fabric is "legal" without testing, each of those items appear to be subject to testing requirements (or at least level of lead ppm) for lead, for phthalates or both. Maybe drawstrings? Oh, no, those are unsafe because of strangulation hazard... What's left to use?

Re: omg help!

oye. So I did it. It wasnt bad at all.... he asked me a million questions, video taped me sewing, video taped my mountain of mail ready to ship out(I had about 100 orders between wednesday and sunday! great timing lol!)

The thing he was most suprised of was the BOOKs factor and when I mentioned church charity craft sales being effected because grandma could no longer sell her handmade booties and blankies..... I dont think he had thought that deep into the law before that. I actually dont think very many people have really thought about this and just what it REALLY means.

anyway- thanks y'all... I was really freeking out but I pulled through it!
