it really makes you wonder...

how the human race survived... how did such a fragile creature make it so long on this earth. seems we need laws to protect us from everyone and ourselves.

i still hold that this issue needs to start at the top of the chain. i don't want lead poisoning, either... so if supplies, and materials at the top of production are clean, so will be products at the finish line.

who are these suppliers that are still creating toxic materials?

even super glue comes in non-toxic formulas.

common sense?

i think so.

common?

not so much.

so frustrating.

I agree! and it's so frustrating to try and get information from one of these manufacturers as to the safety of their item.

Re: it really makes you wonder...

Actually, one way we *did* survive this long was the process of natural selection. Nice way of saying "survival of the fittest," meaning in this case that people unable to tolerate particular situations or substances kind of got weeded out of the gene pool. :-( People with, say, nut allergies likely wouldn't have survived to adulthood and thus reproduced and continued that gene, so fewer people with nut allergies around to pass it on - but now, of course, we do try to keep things like that under control so our kids are safe.

Re: it really makes you wonder...

Hey all, I love it when my kids et dirt. It means they are not eating paint, dog food, garbage, etc. My two boys have tried it all.

But I have had to call poison control, and I got some very reassuring information from them. Even before the CPSIA law, to be labeled "non toxic" (like the craft paint my 2 year old ate) it has to produce no ill effects. I thought non toxic meant, "well he might throw up or break out in hives, but it won't kill him". So I called poison control to find out what to expect (do I need a bucket or a
salve?). Well I was pleasantly surprised to find that non toxic means nothing will happen, or only very minor things.

I know some craft supplies can be toxic and worse, and lead is very scary. I think we are moving in the right direction. I don't think people will get away with totally toxic materials for too much longer now that everyone is so aware of them. In the mean time, lets all eat dirt. Together.

Re: it really makes you wonder...

Humans weren't exposed to too many toxins until we started manufacturing and refining goods. The silly ones who ate poisonous berries and mushrooms helped keep the population down :p

Re: it really makes you wonder...

Why do suppliers keep using toxic materials? Because they're cheaper and they figure they won't get caught. Remember China and the milk? Even after company executives were executed, other companies tried the same thing. It's profit and #@%# everything else.

Re: it really makes you wonder...

I ate dry catfood, played with my dad's lead came (for stained glass making), and played in the dirt, the desert, with junk, with toys like lawn darts, klick-klacks, and rock 'em sock 'em robots (the ones with the sharp spike under the head).

I'm still here. Yeah, jump on me for saying that. ;-)

ANYTHING can be harmful. A good dose of common sense and logical watchfulness will outweigh any forced restricted, any day.

Have you guys heard about the vitamin and holistic healing bill that McCain is championing? If passed, it could severely limit our access to non-pharmaceutical vitamins, herbs, and natural healing. Because we can't be trusted to take Vitamin C or St. John's Wort without Pfizer's approval.

i agree. I think cigarette companies should be shut down. That whole circle of making cigarettes, and then having to create more cancer centres is just ridiculous.

it's not just lead, they are making regulations for everything right now. it's getting insane. every day i hear about some new regulation we need, because we are in danger of bake sale goods.
