fridge magnets

One of my FB fans suggested that I make my quilted letters into fridge magnets. I love the idea, but could someone point me in the direction of information re:using magnets in a kid's toy?
Thanks!

Re: fridge magnets

Since at least one child has died from ingesting magnets, I would run like crazy from magnets. Go to the CPSC.gov web site and do a search for magnets and toys.

Re: fridge magnets

Here's a few links about magnets.

Here's what the last one says about imported toys with magnets, the same would apply to what is made here.

Reminder on the Use of Magnets in Toys for Export to the United States*
Small powerful magnets are a recent hazard in the toy market. If children ingest two magnets or a magnet and a metal object(s) at different times, the magnetic pieces in different areas of the intestines can be attracted to each other through the stomach or intestinal walls. This will crush the trapped internal tissues, cutting off blood flow and causing serious injury, infection, and possibly death. The objects can only be removed with surgery. One child has died and many more have needed surgery to remove magnetic objects from their bowels and to repair holes formed by them.
CPSC staff recommends that magnetic components in toys be too large to swallow. The magnetic components should not fit into the well-known small parts cylinder used for screening choking hazards for children younger than 3 years.** Also, any components that contain small magnets that could be swallowed if they fall out should be manufactured with a durable design that ensures that those magnets do not fall out. An impact test or lifetime cycling tests may be appropriate to test product durability. In order to understand the hazard and supervise magnetic toys around small children, consumers should be warned on the packaging of all magnetic toys with this ASTM suggested language: WARNING: This product contains (a) small magnet(s). Swallowed magnets can stick together across intestines causing serious infections and death. Seek immediate medical attention if magnet(s) are swallowed or inhaled. Staff recommends that all magnet toy products intended for children up to the age of 14 years meet these recommendations.

International standards organizations are aware of this issue and some have adopted requirements intended to prevent injuries. For more information, contact ASTM International (formerly American Society for Testing and Materials), CEN (European Committee for Standardization), and ISO (International Organization for Standardization) toy standards representatives.

Re: fridge magnets

To say nothing of what materials might be included in the magnets, small magnets attached to the back of the letters would be especially dangerous. Maybe less so would be using a magnetic sheet as a bottom layer so that the entire letter in effect becomes a magnet that's too big to be swallowed - but this would still be dangerous for a child young enough to chew on it. If some of it were ingested, it could have the same effect as a small magnet being swallowed.

I take it you're thinking of these as toys, not as something for Mom to put on the fridge to hold artwork? Or are you thinking of the fact that they could be attractive to children, even if they're not the intended users?

Something to put on the fridge. Like the plastic alphabet letters that everyone had on their fridge as a kid....I'm not sure if those were marketed as a toy or not, but I don't know a single person who didn't love spelling out their name on the fridge with them as a kid!

Frayed -
Perhaps you could make them into letters to be used on a felt board instead of as magnets. I'm not sure if the flannel would "stick" to the felt board, but maybe you could substitute felt for the back instead.

Just another idea!

Re: fridge magnets

If I were you, I would invest in insurance before starting this new line. Every kid I know puts those plastic letters in their mouth at some point. The plastic is usually large and thick enough that the kid can't get the magnet portion in their mouths so the choking risk is reduced. Newer versions have the magnet totally encased in plastic so there is no risk at all. I'm not sure how you would reduce the risk with your style magnets but if a kid could get to any portion of that magnet... you need to CYA!
