asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

...but am reluctant to do so. I usually only make for 13 and above. I know from a materials stand point sterling is ok and I can substitute natural stones instead of swarovski BUT come on the choking hazard!!!

I see people make these but I really thought they were not allowed. If there is someway I can make this please help me out and tell me how because it is to match a mother's bracelet and I don't want to say no if I don't have to.

I personally would not want to risk the liability on that one.

i agree - though it can be difficult to pass up a sale, I would politely decline. all you need to do is state that your items are not recommended for children under the age of 13

Yeah that's what I thought but I wanted to make sure I hadn't missed something before I said no :( Thanks all!

I'd pass on it too.. I would think the mom would appreciate the concern over the sale.

The mom will just find someone else desperate enough to make a sale.

I'd not just say "No" but "no way, are you NUTS?! maybe we can think of some other item for the baby."

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

I askwed about this a few months back when there was discussion of ear rings for babies. I see it as a very real chocking hazard. But I was kinda shouted down in that thread by people wanting their baby to make the proper fashion statement.

I would refuse to do it.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

Really bad idea. I have 4 kids and had a daycare for years. A bracelet is to tempting not to be tasted. It's right there, close by, mommy must want me to eat it....

HI, It is nice that she asked you. Personaly I would not/not worth chancing the child choking.
I'mm amazed at mothers that want to put jewelry on babies./

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

You could offer to make her a bracelet she can put away and give to her daughter when she is old enough not to choke on it.. Like for the size of a 5yr old..

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

My son is 18mths and there is no way I would put anything on him...he chews things, bites them, throws them as do his friends of that age (girls and boys). Could well be an accident waiting to happen...

You can say that you can't make an item for a baby but if she would like to place an order for a short bracelet you can't stop her. And if she orders one don't use a toggle clasp.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

I would say no but in a round about way. Like explaining to the mom that all but the governemt now requires all jewelry to be tested unless made of exempt materials. Basically all but fine jewelry materials are not allowed to be used on children under 13's jewelry without a copy of the item being sent out for testing, at a price tag starting at $300 for the lead testing, $350 for the phthalate testing, and $150 for the small parts testing plus the cost of materials and labor. Ask her does she really want you to make her precious child a bracelet that may last only a year till it's out grown or chewed up that either made entirely of sterling silver or karated gold with pearls and semi precious stones or one that made out of lesser materials but requires a high testing price tag.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

the risk i just too great. I wouldn't do it. It's not worth a baby choking to death, and you potentially getting sued. I would decline

If the bracelet is for a gift you could have told them you would be happy to make it for the baby to wear for when she gets older.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

I wore jewelry as a baby...and I lived to tell the tale...

So long as the mom properly supervises her child, all is well. But the moment she looks away, and baby chokes, suddenly it's YOUR fault...b/c you know, there's no way she could possibly be a negligent parent...*rolls eyes*

Even though you *could* make it, I would not want to risk it.

I think you are right to be concerned both about safety and liability issues here. "No" is probably the way to go.

I've had requests to make long scarves for toddlers which I've declined. These had some of the same issues, though not CPSIA-related. Folks just don't seem to consider the hazards involved.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

I see babies ALL the time with bracelets on, and I always shake my head. I mean seriously! What are these people thinking? Is it really worth it for your baby to be fashionable if they might choke on it? Hard decision, but I'd have to pass.

Re: asked to make a name bracelet for a 19 month old...

I'm glad I read all of these entries. Just the other day someone asked me to make a bracelet for a toddler. I had to pass for some of the same reasons posted here. Choking, lead poisoning etc.

Remember the days when Hospitals put bracelets on babies with their names on them? Blue beads for boys, pink for girls? I still have hubbies. Still...babies do like to suck on things. I don't believe in nursing necklaces either. Better for baby to yank on your hair
