I have basically quit making children's items because of all these changes but yet in the market place where I have my store they keep selling everything and anything that is not in compliance. Junk from China that is most definitely not in compliance and new items with no labels or made with whatever they feel like. Some have the painted buttons that have lead in them because I have some of them also. It is alarming to see these items being sold to the public when you know they do not meet the standards of the CPSIA and could be harmful to the children.. But no one polices this and the lead just keeps going on and on. We worry sooo much about being in compliant but then others just blow it off. If no one is going to police this then what is the point. Our children will still not be safe

Re: When will all this be policed

For the large manufacturers CPSIA is already being policed and is based on what is randomly found or complaints made. The all time winner in being caught and fined is Mattel - the same company that has been made exempt from third-party, independent testing by CPSC. (Now, doesn't that make sense?)

The law has been put under the jurisdiction of each State's Attorney General's office. Sooner or later there is going to be someone who wants to make a political name for him/herself and bust somebody's grandma.

Unless the grandma in question is making dreadfully harmful, lead-laden choking hazards that are obviously filled with dangerous chemicals, I don't see how going after such a person would make a (favorable) political name for anyone.

Re: When will all this be policed

I think it will be kind of like the way they police moving companies. My husband and I had an absolutely AWFUL moving experience (I mean so bad we thought we'd never see our things again). Because we had that awful experience I started digging into how moving companies are policed, and found that there are 8 INDIVIDUAL government agents (not agencies....agents) that police moving companies in the U.S. Now this was in 2005 so things may have changed by now, but there is no way that the gov't can keep up with the slew of things they're trying to police if they don't have a correct amount of agents to keep up with it.

Just like the food factory in GA that was found to have all this bacteria, and the startling lack of agents policing those places. And that's policing things our children will actually EAT, and not just some button they might lick once or twice!

Not to say I don't think people will be caught and punished....I just don't think the gov't will ever have enough manpower to police all the things they put in place.

Re: When will all this be policed

These laws can be a royal pain, but if we didn't have someone in charge of making sure items were safe for consumers then we'd really be worse off.

Have you ever worked in the food industry? I have, and I could tell you a few stories that would make you afraid to buy food. I'm not alone in this.

I worked in a factory before, and I can tell you that if it wasn't for the government forcing them to make the changes that we would not be able to buy anything without fear of what might happen to us simply by using it correctly.

Then there are the consumers that don't seem to think things out very well. For instance, I don't need to be told not to use a hairdryer while taking a shower. I don't think that little bag inside my box of shoes is something to eat. Etc. Etc. But somebody somewhere must have, or else why do they need to put that warning on the label or in the booklet that came with my purchase?

Its mostly common sense. If you know your product can be dangerous, then change it. Or put a warning label on it big enough for people to see. Otherwise, you will suffer the consequences right along with the victims of your neglect.

But it is true that I don't like being told what to do, so I'm kinda ticked about it and I don't make baby blankets anymore because of it. I admire all those that have chosen to perservere and I keep watching to see how its going because it still matters to me.

Re: When will all this be policed

Some companies do know about it. The Children's Place (or maybe it was Gymboree) destroyed millions of dollars worth of "unsafe" clothing. Their stock took a huge dive when it happened.
