I know I can just have them tested or go through a supplier who tests, but you end up going through so many. I'm just wondering if there is another option besides using snaps in certain places on infant clothing(like the inner legs, etc.), please let me know folks.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

Going in a completely different direction, I used to prefer baby gowns over the snap leg sleepers when my kids were infants. Took a lot less work to just pull up the gown, change the diaper, and pull the gown back down.

As for replacing the snaps -- I LOVE the idea of ties!

I use Velcro that way I don't worry about them popping off and getting in baby's mouth!

Hi,

I saw someone mention a list of snap suppliers who are doing the testing. Does anyone have a link to that list? Thank you!

I forget the proper name for them, but the small fabric loop that you slip a toggle through. You see them on some types of coats. I've occasionally seen the toggle portion made with a roll of fabric.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I've just found that snaps can be a problem. They sometimes pop off even with the best application because to some degree it depends upon the users(parent's) treatment of the snap. I know myself that when my kids were babies, I would just pull apart the snaps in an effort to get a diaper changed quickly----I learned from the experience that snaps sometimes pop off(and when they do, then what? sometimes a perfectly good outfit would be ruined, because it could be repaired, but dag!) OR the snap after repeated use and wear would eventually begin to wear at the fabric---especially with knits. This was even with a stabilizing interfacing used. Just a pain in general.

I know that snaps are fairly new in the grand scheme of sewing, just wondered what other options there would be to replace using them, specifically for in between the legs to facilitate diaper changes. I do like the button idea and have used it on my own children's clothing. A button can simply be sewn back on and it doesn't wear as much on the fabric. It's great for something like a romper but I must admit it can be a pain for pants/coveralls.

Someone might say (not me, really truly, just playing devil's advocate here!) that if a button CAN come off, it could be a choking hazard.

But I am totally following this thread because I already sell onesies (with snaps, natch!) and I've contemplated dyeing fabric and making things out of that.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I use velcro for my baby goods. It worked fine for my little one who was very impatient while I'm putting bibs or clips. So I could put him on very quickly with velcro without even looking at the closure. Yes, it can be undone easier than snaps. But I personally think if baby can grow to get undone the velcro closure on bibs and pacifier clip, maybe it's time for her/him to graduate from them :) Only annoying thing I found about velcro is it sticks to other clothes if you put them undone in the washing machine.

Plastic snaps are great!

I think ties would be a better option than velcro.
