What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I know I can just have them tested or go through a supplier who tests, but you end up going through so many. I'm just wondering if there is another option besides using snaps in certain places on infant clothing(like the inner legs, etc.), please let me know folks.

I use VELCRO for everything.
lol If you are using the brand name you are supposed to use all caps.
Just a tip if you are going to use.
I didn't know until someone else here got a letter from them.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

Honestly, as a mom... I just can't see velcro working as well as a snap. If the child so much as wiggles, it would come undone. It's the same reason I don't use velcro on my bibs -- my son would rip his bib off all the time.

I thought Dritz tested their snaps already?

I found that snaps last forever - VELCRO wears out after time.

they make twill tape that has snaps on it. i think VELCRO might make the item very stiff and uncomfy for a newborn. I believe SNAP SOURCE was also on the tested list.

Ohhh, creative -- good idea!

I make some of my bibs with ties instead of snaps. I'm sure ribbons are lead tested.

I was going to mention ties too. The bottom could be sewn up and then maybe some ties attaching on the shoulder, the front kind of crossing kimono style? Would be a little more of a challenge changing a diaper though.

I think velcro or ties would be fine for some things, but for legs I'd always want snaps.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I would think velcro would be uncomfortable and wear out after some time. Wish I had a better solution, but snaps are the best in my opinion.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

what about the plastic snaps? They're so easy to apply with a snap press and you get all those great colors.

SnapSource is one of the companies that tests...their metal snaps rock.

If you are unsure about snaps I have found that my local Health Dept. will do xrf testing for toys and others items for free so I had them do a finished product test on one of my costumes and and got the results in one day.

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I always hated the bibs and stuff that had velcro on my kids' clothes - the velcro always got gunked up with lint and string.

I would put some pressure on your supplier to test - you could always site some of the suppliers of snaps that do test and let them know that you will take your business elsewhere if they don't

They're also so cute and easier to snap. :)

I have some adorable embossed snaps that have butterflies, puppies, stars, and flowers on them. So cute!

Those are called kimono shirts. =) i loved them.

Where are you putting the snaps? I would suggest the plastic snaps also, or buttons (sewed on very, very well). But I wanted to say, if you are putting snaps on the legs, I hated the snap legs. I never used them at all. It was always easier to just pulled the pants off to change the diaper. =)

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I also think for pant legs snaps are really the only quick way to diaper change, think about all those times you've had to do a quick change in the car, or even on your lap!
If you find a supplier who certifies please post in one of the supplier threads in the CPSIA section, everyone will appreciate it!

Re: What are some good options to replace snaps on infant clothing?

I say get the snaps tested... or, only buy from a manufacturer who is already certifying the snaps are tested.

As a mom, and a boutique owner, I don't buy items with velcro. I think it looks cheap... the edges start to curl with time... and it sticks to everything in the dryer. Yuck.
