CPSIA is legislation that is passed and will go into effect in February - some is in effect now, that will STOP all handcraft of any item made that "could be used" by any child under the age of 12 unless those items are tested - some individually at approximately $500 each test per item. Also any manufactured item regardless of the size of the business. Can you afford to test all of your materials and your items - and each item could need testing.

If you have kids, it is going to raise the price on everything you buy for them. I can't imagine how much clothes are going to end up costing.

As a crafter/knitter/artist I and many like me who sell their handmade goods from small home based businesses are extremely concerned about the changes that will take effect in February 2009. Will these laws affect us? Will we be required to test our products even though most of them are one of a kind, made in the USA, and already made from natural and safe materials? (Organic cotton, wool, handspun yarn, wood, etc...) Please consider the small crafter exempt and give us specific guidelines in your legislation. I work like this because I wanted to make beautiful and safe products here in the USA, WITHOUT plastics, chemicals, and toxic materials to give consumers an alternative to mass produced unsafe products. Thank you for your consideration and please pay close attention to how your legislation will affect the many and growing numbers of us in the USA that are already creating safe, toxic free hand made in the USA products.
