I tried to post a comment on the Consumer Reports blog and it gives me a message, "Sorry, we cannot accept this data". What the heck?? It's not the length of what I wanted to post, there are a couple comments there longer than mine....I wonder what's up? Anyway, here's a link to the blog post I was trying to respond to and a C & P of the response I'm trying to post in case anyone wants to read it:
http://blogs.consumerreports.org/safety/2009/04/businesses-rally-against-cpsia-consumer-product-safe...I just want to say Rick Woldenberg is awesome. I agree with his comments wholeheartedly and couldn't put it better myself.
I am very sad that Nancy Nord has asked the President to appoint a new CPSC Chairman and allow her to step down, she's done a wonderful job in a very stressful situation. We can only hope the new Chairman will be as tireless in their support of the children's product industry as Ms. Nord has been.
The goal here is SAFE children's products, CPSIA will only produce CERTIFIED products. As we have seen in the past, the two things are NOT one and the same. The overseas factories (mostly Chinese) that have faked safety tests or created special runs to "prove" their products are compliant with our laws will just continue to do so. And as has already been said, many US based businesses that create perfectly safe products will be (or already have been) put out of business.
Consumer Reports, USPIRG, and the other organizations that pushed this legislation through should really leave their "regulation for regulation's sake" mantra behind and support CONSUMER SAFETY, which from my understanding is what these organizations were started to do in the first place.
