Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

Can you make and sell bean bag toys for kids with wheat, dried peas or beans in them?

I'm sure you couldn't ship them out of the country, for one, plus I would worry about bugs or mold if they get damp.
Sorry to be a downer, but those were my first thoughts.

I would worry about potential allergens as well. Many kids have gluten and other food allergies. I certainly wouldn't want to risk sickening a child with non-hypoallergenic materials. Buckwheat hulls would be a better choice IMHO. They don't mold and are relatively allergen free.

But you still can probably not ship them outside the US.

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

Thanks, those are all things I hadn't thought about. Think I will still to the bean bags with my own family since we don't have allergy issues amongst the kids. I use the wheat filled ones as hand warmers/bed warmers and put them in the freezer for "ice" packs. But prob best to keep them to myself. Bummer.

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

another filler is crushed walnut shells (find them in large bags at your local pet store-- they're used to line bird cages and such), but this would be risky for kids who have nut allergies.... and there's still the export issue.

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

"Official" bean bags are filled with corn kernels:

http://www.playcornhole.org/rules.shtml

"The corn bags shall be made from two fabric squares with a quarter inch double stitched seam on all four sides. The corn bags should be made from 12 oz / sq yd duck canvas and may be any color that is easy to see during Cornhole play. Each bag shall be filled with approximately 2 cups of corn feed and finished bags should be a minimum of 6" X 6" square and weigh between 14 and 16 ounces."

Crazy, isn't it?

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

Speaking as the mother of a highly allergic child (both wheat and nuts are deadly to her and she has a long list of other allergens as well), I would encourage you to clearly state what you use for filling in your listing, on your packaging, and on the label. Although I'd think it would be good to avoid the major allergens (wheat is one of the major 8), you can be certain that whatever it is, someone is likely to be allergic to it!! Some people are very allergic to rice. So the best practice is to accurately label things (and a permanent label about the filling on the product will protect you, too, in case an allergic baby chews on the product, you've protected yourself by providing fair warning to users).

I'd agree that buckwheat hulls are a safer bet allergen-wise than some other fillings.

Yes, I would think putting it in your listings should be fine. So much better than the fumes that come from those styrofoam thingies.

PS - I would think you could also use rice. The regular long cooking kind, not the minute rice kind. I'm sure there are people out there that have rice allergies, but maybe not as widespread as peanut allergies.

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

Yep, allergies of all kinds are out there. I had a child allergic to corn for the first three years of his life. Thank goodness he out grew it!

As the parent I always read labels to find out the filler ingredients. I also have a child allergic to tree nuts, so I am quite used to looking for "bean bags" stuffed with walnut shells. Its very common.

My advice: Label, Label, Label. :)

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

We are wheat free in my house. :) I make beanbags for my children (we have dozens of them around here!) with mungbeans inside. They are small and very hard. You just can't get them wet. :)

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

I make beanbags with beans. But you can use rice.

Pebbles work too if you're sure they are safe (no lead, not covered in plastic like some fish tank rocks). Pebbles may need to be tested for lead though.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned sand. I don't know about testing but it would be safe all natural, allergen free, and cheap as dirt. lol sorry couldn't help myself.

Re: Bean bags with beans or wheat filling

I know someone who had a deadly reaction to buckwheat. Allergies are hard to predict and you can't be too careful with young children I would say.

I agree with posting the materials in your listing. My daughter puts everything in her mouth. It's awful. I can't tell you how many crayons she has bitten and chewed on.

Who knew (aside from you, quirky) that beanbags were so specific!!
I like the idea of filling them with rice or buckwheat hulls.
