working on an article about the tracking labels... but this is interesting:

Are tracking labels required on domestically made products or are they only required for imported products?

Tracking labels are required for all children’s products manufactured one year after enactment of the CPSIA (August 14, 2009) regardless of whether they are domestic or imported products.

so, there's a year grace period?

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

I thought the same thing, gigglekids. I am keeping a journal of when/where each item was purchased, as well as when I work on it, and finally when it's listed/item number. That way, I can easily track it. It's a pain in the butt, but I think it will keep me in the clear!

and yes... you should keep track of where you buy your materials... especially if you use a lot of suppliers... it's really important.

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

woohoo!

Anyway..yeah you should keep a record, but it's not required by law. Recommended, but not required. If you have old inventory, just put "in-stock prior to 8/19/09" or whatever date you have & I'm sure that will be fine.

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

Thanks everyone for your help. I just have to "muddle" through it to try to figure out the labels. My labels now have my name and my etsy shop location and e-mail address, but I think it still needs a city and state if I am understanding it correctly. I know I'm being a little paranoid, but I want to make sure that the labels I use are in compliance with the CPSIA also, as I'm thinking some of this printer ink most likely isn't CPSIA compliant. I feel like I'm stuck in a revolving door in a windstorm!!!

By the way, how in the heck do you guys find your way back to the thread you posted on after you post? I guess I'm totally ignorant about this and haven't come to the forums much because I can't find where I've posted!! Thanks for your help.

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

I am feeling so much more hopeful after reading these posts. I had just about decided to completely stop making children's items (which are my favorite by far) because I was feeling over-whelmed! I think I can comply after reading the Q&A supplied on the link by StaceyJean on page 1 (called "Important Notes for Crafters"

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

mudpies, when on the main forum page, you'll see in the upper right-hand corner it says "topics Ive posted in"

No need to install a hack for that one.

I honestly wouldn't worry about the ink. Can you use a fabric-ink & then rubber stamp your tags? Can you get embroidered tags made? (Those look the swankiest anyway)

Also, thank you poshdots :)

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

jmkraige, there's a link earlier in the thread that goes to the 7-page (easy-to-read) guidelines as to what small businesses/crafters need to do & how you should label things & where, etc.

It's the official document & you'll gain no information more valuable than reading it for yourself.

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

Sorry if any of this was already addressed... the only 2 items in my shop specifically for children under 12 are my paci clips and bib clips! All other items are intended for moms. Do the paci clips and bib clips need a permanent label attached or are they considered too small to permanently label with all the CPSIA requirements? I know the hand tag needs the CPSIA info!

Re: Tracking Labels... [nitty gritty]

this pertains to me for my childrens clothing:

"9. What cohort information is to be marked or ascertainable? Do small volume
manufacturers or crafters need to create a system that includes batch, run or other
numbers?
Although Section 103(a) does not require manufacturers that do not use lot, batch or run
numbers to create such a system, the Commission believes that compliance with this
Section generally will require that manufacturers have in place a reasonable means to
ascertain detailed production information, including the means to distinguish products
made from different factories, made with different components, at different times or have
other material differences that make the product non-identical from previous products.
The business and recordkeeping practices of peer manufacturers should be considered.
Small volume manufacturers and crafters may be unlikely to use lot, batch or run
numbers, and, again, the Commission does not interpret Section 103(a) to require them to
create such a system. Nevertheless, reasonable practices should be in place by such
manufacturers to keep records of components used in their products."
