I am both horrified and sad. This whole thing is both scary and terrible. The Goodwill store near my house no longer has a childrens toy section at all. When I asked, they said "there are too many recalls, so we won't sell them any more". And the childrens book section is going the same way, as they sell off the books they are not putting any more on the shelf, that section went from six whole bookcases in the book section down to two shelves on one bookcase, and soon there will be none... For many folks, the thrift store was the only affordable source of books for their kids. Sigh. My heart keeps breaking.
The thrift store I worked at would actually destroy them, because people would wait until we threw them out and dumpster dive, instead of just buying a book.
Wow, how saddening. And maddening. I sure am glad I kept some of my own childhood favorites, so I have something to pass on to my kids. How will today's youth learn to defeat their own demons if they aren't even allowed to play with and conquer the simple hazards of childhood? Thanks for the article Caffeine.
I'm so upset about all of this! Of all the things that come under this new law, why books?!!!
Oh I understand "their" reasoning, but there is such a thing as history and it isn't always in the written word, but what can be found in touching and turning the pages of a true classic in its original form--a first printing for example.
Quilted Pet, pencil lead is actually graphite--not real lead. They only call it that because it is the same color. What I don't understand is if something has already been sold and deemed safe why it has to be re-assesed? Sort of like my stupid CHIP office telling me I have to re-verify that my child is a US citizen every year. If I was last year wouldn't I still be the next? It's ridiculous.
i am referring to a book and movie with sean connery called the name of a rose. it was done in 1986, nothing to do with the law, but with the part that the pages were poisoned (in a monastery). sorry if it went over heads.
The only thing that will make a different is by going to the polls in Norember and voting them out! They won't listen so they shouldn't be representing us.
I mentioned CPSIA to a family member last week and they said..'well in 2 years we can change Congress through voting'...I told them, that's too late to save small business from CPSIA.
