Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

Hello All
Please do not forget to thank the European Union for stirring up all this mess in the first place. They were the first to get all worked up about lead used in electronics. Lead that is very much needed to make a good product. The time is now to start holding our politicians responsible for what they do. If they pass restrictive laws we need to vote them out of office at the next election and they need to be told that's is what we intend to do, and then we need to do it. Grass roots movements made a change in our last election and and it can and will work in the future. But as long as 50 plus percent of the registered voters choose to stay home and do nothing there is no hope. Get out and vote.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

Make a copy of your pattern, mail it to yourself. If you ever see someone copying your design, take'em to court, hand the judge your sealed and dated envelope to have your honor open and see.

anyone else tries to take your design, you have a court hearing that you won.

There have got to be some basic principles about copying. Say I paint a house; you paint a house. Are we copying each other? I make a dress, you make a dress.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

Yeah.....I am for it...Maybe because I have had more designs copied and stolen then you. But if you created something and someone was allowed to copy it you too would be upset a bit.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

This is crazy. I'd definitely be upset if someone blatantly copied my stuff, same color, same fabric, exactly the same design, but what this bill is proposing sounds like a very slippery slope..

All I can say is YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! This will only protect the large corporations who have massive funds for attorneys. Pitiful.

Artists have been immitating each other for centuries are we supposed to stop learning Art History too?

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

That's ridiculous! I don't sell clothing, but it seems these huge companies could afford the best lawyers, while you'd be stuck with whatever you could afford. Yeah, wonder who's coming out ahead here.

Personally, I've had to SUE people for knocking off my designs, so it is about time they create real legislation on this issue.

When someone copies your work, and undercuts your pricing to the SAME vendors, you'll feel differently...

actually I've had this happen to me. Stolen my design and undersold me. I was pissed. But you know what, they have yet to out sell me. Just because they steal my design doesn't mean they are stealing my customers.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

i think they are just generalizing the whole issue. if this is a fight against intentional designer knock-offs thats one thing. But to say they own the design of a specific collar or sleeve is outrageous. It just isn't as black and white as they are making it out to be. Where do you draw the line?

At the end of the day, they have to realize that no one is reinventing the wheel here. We are all artists, reinterpreting the past and putting our own spin on it. Nothing is completely original anymore! Not even the designs that they are trying to protect as their own property.

Sorry, sweet pea, the woman wasn't fired, as far as we all know she is still on the commission, thank God she is the only one on our side! She fought against this from the beginning, and the beginning was long before aug 08. She told the dems on the committee that it wasn't workable, couldn't be enforced, and was down right insane. Bush was against it but signed it because the dems had enough votes to overturn his veto. Don't blame it on him. When the castrated ones in washington hear the words,"it's for the children? they buckle.

Hang on to your monsters, you are only seeing the beginning! Don't believe me? Well, I'll talk to you in another few months.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

If all those things are true...I should be either dead or severely retarded! I remember playing with a painted lead circus horse! The horse was MADE of lead...I remember my father soldering it.
It's things like this that make me kinda glad I'm living in another country!
But it probably won't be long before this crap affects everyone. It's like Whoops, the rich folk caught us poor slobs trying to make a buck again... When will we ever learn that ALL the money belongs to them!

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

Sorry, I didn't have time to read through the 13 pages of posts to see if this has already been said, but someone early on wanted to know who was responsible for this act.
Here's your names: The Design Piracy Prohibition Act was first introduced in 2006 by Representative Robert W. Goodlatte, R-Va. On April 30, 2009, the bill was officially reintroduced in U.S. House of Representatives by Goodlatte along with Representatives Bill Delahunt, R-Mass., and Jerrold Nadler, R-N.Y.

Re: The Final Blow to Handmade!

Forgot to mention; if you want to call your representative, tell them you are opposed to The Design Piracy Prohibition Act (HR 2196), and ask them where they stand on this issue.
