Testing handmade items in Canada?

If I were to wholesale my items (baby and children's items) to a retailer do I need to test my items to ensure they are safe? Or is having liability insurance enough?
I know big chain stores, Walmart, Zellers, The Bay, The Gap, etc test all their clothing, and children's items. Is this mandatory?
Would selling my handmade items or any for that matter be a bigger liability for a retailer, or would all the fault (IF something were to EVER happen) lie on the maker of the product?
I live in Canada and am curious about laws in Canada.

You would need to follow the Canadian laws governing the testing of products.

The CPSIA governs items sold in to buyers in the USA.

I think the fault would lie on the maker for sure. Even in the victim sues the retailer, you can be sure that the retailer will turn around and sue you if it is worth their while. But remember, they can only sue for what you are worth... if they sue for a million and you only have 500,000 they can't make you come up with the other half out of no where.

For this reason I would suggest seeking legal help and setting up a corporation so that you separate your personal life and your business life. That way if anyone did want to sue, they would have to sue your company and not you personally.
