Stop giving up

I am so tired of reading a new thread every day about people asking if they should just give up. The answer is no. Read through the CPSIA website and try to make your product work.

Don't just roll over and take it. Stand up for yourself and make your voice heard. Start writing letters to your congressmen, spread the word about this unfair law. Do something anything just as long as it doesn't include burying your head in the sand.

Sorry to offend rant over.

Re: Stop giving up

But who knows what will happen in the future. There are still a number of months to go things can still be changed. All I'm saying is read everything over before you just quit. In most cases it is workable.

It can be hard at times, but it's good to be optomistic.

Re: Stop giving up

That's what I'm saying. I know if the laws don't change I'm going to have to make a lot of adjustments to my diapers, but it's something I can overcome. I'm not going to let them stop me from doing what I love. What's the saying if there's a will there's a way.

twinkletoesdiapers..you are right on mark and sad that so many just throw in the towel. I'm hanging on and I can not see them stopping something that has been going on for centuries. I say everyone hold on tight and put on your floatation devices...;)

Re: Stop giving up

Some of us simply do not have a choice. We cannot "make it work" without spending thousands of dollars on testing because there may not be the ability to adjust our products. It is unfair to say that in most cases it is workable, because that is simply not true.

There are many of us who will not be able to continue, and there are others who will continue to operate but not legally. Honestly, it's a little bit frustrating for those of us who may have to go out of business to hear "make it work".

Re: Stop giving up

I don't want to give up because I have not even opened my doors yet. However, I have created a tie tutu kit and my supplier of tulle has GCC. But, if I make the kit, do I have to test independently? This is all so confusing. I took the webinar and the man claims that we all need to take ownership of "engineering, labeling and manufacturing." However, it also has a list that says nylon fabric is exempt....

Re: Stop giving up

I guess I won't give up as long as there is an ounce of fight left in me. I write, call, email, fax, sign petitions. I am in compliance for now, but who knows after Feb. It all depends on how they handle the testing for buttons, zippers, snaps. If it absolutely has to be third party testing on a finished item and they won't accept GCC's from our suppliers, I will have to drop some lines from my store. I don't think of it as giving up, just adjusting my product lines. I know for some it isn't this simple.

I do get discouraged, and I'm so tired of waiting. It has put me on hold to introduce new products. But I do have to say it does keep me going to hear people encourage me to stay in the fight.

I think we all have to make the decision for ourselves if we want to do the dance CPSIA requires and if the dance is even reasonable for your product, or shift gears into products that are either not for children or use all items on the exempt list. Again, this may be a simplistic view for some of you.

Bugga love
You're not giving up your putting up a fight. I'm not saying that everyone can make it work but check to make sure that you can't. I'm saying don't quit until there is nothing left for you to do. We just need to stay positive no matter how hard it might be.

Re: Stop giving up

So if one uses only items from the exempt list, this does not pertain to them?

I just want people to think positive and create while they can. I'm not picking on anyone. I've said what I needed to get off my chest. Sorry if it caused offense to anyone.

Re: Stop giving up

I think the toughest part is the constant changing by the CPSC. Over the past nine months, it has been incredible.

I stumbled across this website the other day. It has a lot and I haven't read a lot of it. But there are Etsy sellers on there. Worth taking a peek. http://cpsia-central.ning.com/

Re: Stop giving up

I guess each of us selling kids items see how this law will affect us personally in a different way. For me, I want to make ragdolls. No two alike. People were sending me pictures of their children and I would copy the hair color, style, eye color. Some of them came out pretty close to the child. But . . .

I am 72, doing okay, but there is no way I could do the testing, and it appears that each doll would need to be tested. I have thoughts even on the testing. How do I know what kind of a place the testing place will be. Dirty, do they do good work, honest? Then you factor in that I am retired, and there you go. No way could I afford the testing.

I look at making ragdolls as a tradition, as a handmade craft. I don't produce that many. I think it should be my American right to create. I don't even care about changes to the CPSIA. I want to see it done away with and a fresh start, a realistic one, put in its place. And leave handmade crafts out of it.

yeah I mean at the very least, people should stop making posts when they "give up." It's pointless.

Re: Stop giving up

My gut feeling, whenever I see one of those "should I give up" posts, is that someone is seeking permission or an excuse to do something that is actually their own choice so they can pretend they aren't choosing. Well, ya are. You are choosing. You, yourself. If you quit, you quit. If you don't, you don't. Your choice. I can say Oh, no, don't quit, or I can say Heck, quit already. But I'm not making you stay, or quit, and neither is the CPSIA, and neither is anything else.

Just you.

Re: Stop giving up

I guess everyone has to make that choice on their own, bottom line is that most do this as a business. If it's too costly to comply there is the question of whether giving up or operating illegally.
Regardless of optimism, there comes a point to decide.

Re: Stop giving up

I'm glad to see a little optimism here....I've pulled back from posting because of the significant amount of negativity on these boards. Although I understand the frustration, I would love to see more posts on how people are using creativity to comply with CPSIA instead of ranting about how unfair the law is. I think we all agree it is unfair, and we all can do our part in writing letters but I think now is the time to start putting some of that energy into figuring out how to continue making our products once the stay is lifted in a few months.
