Sorry if this is a dumb question...

but it's been nagging at me! There's been much talk about how sellers are/will not be allowed to use disclaimers saying that their products are not intended for children under 12. If that's the case, then why is it acceptable for fabric stores, jewelry supply sellers, button manufacturers etc etc to use a similar disclaimer stating that their products are not intended to make childrens' items with? How come their disclaimers are allowed to stand- meaning that they don't have to test and or provide information on the lead/phthalates content of their materials? It just seems like a double standard, to me...

Melissa..

Not a dumb question, but you will get a dumb Government answer. Fabric stores are not manufacturers. We are the ones who the gov considers the manufacturer that is selling the finished product to the consumer... Go figure. Buy it for your family, and make it up for your child that's okay. Make it for someone else then it's LETHAL HAZARDOUS MATERIAL.... It's in the magic of money changing hands...

Sorry, I don't know the answer, but there's no such thing as a dumb question. ♥

Re: Sorry if this is a dumb question...

It just seems so weird to me- I guess it makes sense that the stores/suppliers are not "manufacturers," but it seems like even the actual manufacturers- the places that make the cloth etc.- are getting a free ride, because there are lots of cases where the stuff they're putting out is obviously for kids, ("baby yarn"? Thomas the Tank engine fabric? Etc...) and yet it seems like they still must be using these disclaimers, and then the stores are just passing on the info...

You're right, and that is just one of the reasons that this law is crazy. It's not really about "protecting the chillins".

Re: Sorry if this is a dumb question...

MelissaAbram,

The makers of these items are going to be held JUST as responsible.

It's not like we are the ONLY ones that are getting "punished".

So, everyone relax :)

I think that as this gets more worked out, and people are speaking up to remind them WE ARE HERE, then the fact that you use products from other places that are certified will be okay.

I can see some concern in obscure metal buttons from some unknown source that you picked up at a garage sale, and not wanting my 3-year-old to chew on it.

But yeah...

Just as responsible for what? Can you give me an instance where fabric or yarn poisoned a child? So relax? Relax while I am being raped, and then taxed on it?

This whole thing is a bogus scam, foisted on us by the bleeding heart wackos and a feel good about themselves congress. It is about destroying the small business person, the underground economy, the unregulated and the unregistered. Take a look at how much of this so called
stimulus package helps small business, $000000. We don't pay into the campaign funds, we don't take them on fancy vacations. We are just the little people, that support their dumb asses..

Raped and taxed?

What the heck?

I'm very confused.

As far as my understanding, yarn is exempt. Because there is not instance where it did poison a child.

And yes. Relax :) It's essential to life. Or else everyone will just be strung out and incomprehensible. And there will be a lovely world full of moody people :)

Not saying you have to be passive, just calm.
