I was just wondering if this would be worth it...

We've been granted a stay, but it's just that, a stay. From what I have understood, nothing has really been changed at the moment.

Would it be a good idea for all of us to have another blog in to announce the good news, but remind people to keep working on this and, of course, get the word out to more and more people?

Just an idea. I'd love your feedback.

Re: Second Blog In?

I suggest using Sen. DeMint's blog article as a starting place for what is needed (and encourage all of your audience to call their officials to support Sen. DeMint's legislation. -- it's going to take MORE noise than before to give this common sense legislation the breath of life. DeMint is Republican and they're in a sad minority position right now.)

Also, research the so-called consumer groups' outrage at the Stay and feverish work to get it overturned. They also want THEIR people appointed in the remaining 3 Commission slots, and they want it NOW.

We HAVE to stay on top of their efforts and get the word out to people to counter their attacks on the stay and on bringing common sense to this law.

Re: Second Blog In?

Count me in too.

I'm from Senator DeMint's state ... South Carolina. I believe congressmen should represent all Americans, but I've heard that often they mainly listen to their constituents. So I hope to use the fact that he represents me, to help my fellow crafters.

Tell me your thoughts!!

I've already contacted my Congressmen, including Mr. DeMint several times in the past 2 months.

Yesterday I worked on a rough draft of a letter to Mr. DeMint thanking him for his tireless work against CPSIA.

My letter will let him know that I appreciate the year-long STAY from the CPSC, because now I don't have that terrible weight hanging over me, of how to deal with the Feb. 10 2009 deadline.

But I truly know it is a just feeling of false security.

Plus it just means that my business will be spinning its wheels for the next year (or until the law is repealed, rewritten or amended.)

(I have more than a thousand fabrics in stock, easily worth $25,000 or more. I have at least $17,000 of leotards (wholesale value) in stock. This is much more than I could possibly use or sell in a year. There is no viable solution under the present law for me to have them tested ONE AT A TIME ... EVER. Not now, nor a year from now.)

I can't make any major business decisions (other than to declare bankruptcy). I can't expand my business. I can't make alliances with other business ... partially because they are in the same boat as I. I can't continue developing new products, as I was doing before CPSIA was passed.

I plan to encourage Mr. DeMint to work as an advocate of small business, and to encourage his fellow congressmen to act sooner, rather than later, to join him in scrapping this law.

ALL of my congressmen are Republicans, but my other national senator is Lindsay Graham, who is very well know for working "across the aisle" with Democrats, and is highly respected for his moderate views.

I have already been in contact with a wide variety of small businesses and organizations in my state, which will be negatively impacted by this law. It's too bad we can't work together some how.

Any other suggestions from anyone for my letter? I do not intend to let this matter fade away until next February. If necessary I will write to my Congressmen on a regular schedule (like every week.)

Is there no group (like the US Small Business Administration), behind whom we small business can can rally?

The Handmade Toy Alliance managed to get this issue into the top 10 issues in the country via Change.org. They have made it clear that they are willing to represent toy stores and toymakers, AS WELL AS children's product manufacturers from across the country.

I haven't had a chance to join the Alliance, but I think its darn well time to do it. There are hundreds of thousands of crafters and micro-manufacturers around the USA. Together we could add up to a huge number.
