Please help...can't find what I'm looking for

My toy products are made of all natural wood. Isn't there an exemption from third party testing on items that are made of natural wood. There's obviously no lead or chemicals involved.

I'm looking on the CPSIA website, and can't find anything about exemptions...still looking...

thanks

For the current full list of raw materials offically exempt from CPSIA lead testing please read http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/frnotices/fr09/leaddeterminationsfinalrule-draft.pdf
That list is only about items that are exempt from having to have the lead testing done there maybe other tests that need to be done before you can fill out your GCC and tracking information for compliancy.
Other test that may have to be done :
Phthalates
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect108.html#requirements
Mandatory Toy Safety Test Standards
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect106.html
Federal Regulations & Testing by product

Beautiful block sets!

My only concern is that you check them against the small parts regulations. And that all packaging needs to have choking hazard labels as required.

You also need the CPSIA labeling at least on one piece of the set.

thanks for the responses. Faye, not sure what you mean by needing the CPSIA labeling on at least one piece of the set...

Tracking labels required on every product for children under 13
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/sect103policy.pdf

Mine says:

FayeMaloneDesigns.com
Kinsman, Oh, USA
Handemade in the USA
of Imported fabric
10ASONDJFMAMJJ11

The bottom numbers and letters coorespond to the years 2010, 2011 and the letters are the months of the year. I make a colored stitch under the year and month of completion of a garment. The label is sewn into the back of the garment along with size, and FTC tags.

For your blocks, you could have a brand made and brand one block. Use a wood burning tool to burn a dot under month and year. You could have a rubber stamp made, but you would have to have lead in paint testing results for your ink, and it would have to be permanant.

Re: Please help...can't find what I'm looking for

And this has to be printed on at least one item in the product?

And every product in stores has this? Doesn't seem like it. I'll read it, the link provided, but it seems a bit ridiculous. I've never done this...what is the penalty for having toy products out there without this labeling?

Up to $100,000 per missing label.

Re: Please help...can't find what I'm looking for

Thanks for all the info...This is all kind of new to me. I'm cramming a lot of information in...

one more question:

If I have an item that I paint, do I have to have that item tested for lead, or can I obtain the certificate from the paint manufacturer, who no doubt has tests of their own conducted?

Re: Please help...can't find what I'm looking for

If you can get a copy of the testing for lead in paint and the testing has been done by a CPSIA approved testing facility. I think that another woodworker has posted a company that has the testing certs available. I'll try to find it.
