Mattel, Primary Reason For Toy Safety Law, Gets Exempted From It

Third-party safety tests not required for Mattel.

WASHINGTON – Toy-makers, clothing manufacturers and other companies selling products for young children are submitting samples to independent laboratories for safety tests. But the nation's largest toy maker, Mattel, isn't being required to do the same.

I stumbled upon this article this morning. Mattel has built their own testing labs, and are allowed to run their own tests instead of going to a neutral third party testing facility like everyone else. This just allows all sorts of room for cover-ups and secrecy.

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

Ah, but they were "following the laws" before when they were "testing". Are they using the same testers that were testing their products made in the same locations that were "following the lead in paint laws" that were found to be in violation? How much has Mattel contributed to Waxman's reelection campaigns?

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

this reminds me of all the "tests " that The cigarette companies did ...way back in the 1930s, and the 1960s....never ever coming out with the truth...until forced to.

Having third party testing seems honest. In house testing does not.

if I was ever a Mattel buyer I sure wouldn't be now! I have made our toys forever and will be sure to spread the word, the word of "Boycott".

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

"It's really ironic that the company that was a principal source of the problem" is now getting favorable treatment from the government, said Michael Green, executive director of the Center for Environmental Health in Oakland, Calif.

Doesn't anyone have a brain in Washington??????

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

I just read about this on The Consumerist website and came over here to see what everyone was saying... sometimes the way our government works (or doesn't work) makes me really sad. And disgusted.

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

We need to contact the CPSC and demand component testing on our items. My components have already been tested and it is redundant and expensive to test again.

Here is the webpage to contact the CPSC:

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

I sent a message to them, it says this -
"I am outraged at the exemption of the original culprits in the whole Lead in Toys Issue from following the new laws. As a taxpayer I demand an exemption as well since I am in no way able to perform the ancient art of Alchemy and produce Lead from cotton and polystuffing."

This photo is more relevant than ever. I feel like doing the Country Joe McDonald shout out from the 60's aimed directly at the idiocy of laws aimed at the underdog by jerks kissing the feet of Big Dumb Business. Can you spell B-O-Y-C-O-T-T ?
Now that's out of the way I really do feel better.

Re: Mattel exempt from CPSIA testing.

anyone know (or be willing to write) a sample letter to share the outrage of the CPSC Mattel love affair? Then we can get the masses to send letters or sign a petition...

I just read this in the paper this morning. It is outrageous that the company who started all of this is being allowed to do their own testing. Forget what they say about them not being under the influence of the corporation--their paychecks are coming from Mattel. Talk about conflict of interest. And isn't this the company least worthy of our trust? Our entire political system in this country seems to have been hijacked by lobbyists with deep pockets. On both sides. I'm not trying to start political arguments--just frustrated that Mattel has now hit us with a double whammy.

I totally agree with you! I'm not surprised but very disgusted nevertheless over hearing about this!
