Letting your customers know why the label?

Is anyone explaining the CPSIA label requirements to their customers? I had to sew labels into my hats with the pertinent information and they seem large and unsightly. I thought maybe it was a good idea to add some brief explanation of the CPSIA labeling requirements to my invoice. Does anyone do this? What exactly would you put? Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

Valid question. I am interested to see the feedback. I don't think it is an issue with general apparel, but I can see your reasoning for hats. They look very strange on a tutu waistband too. Mainly because they have to be sewn onto tulle. And they are almost the same width as the waistband. But I digress...

I was looking at my daughter's toys & clothes the other day to see some examples of tag layouts, etc. And I was surprised at how many of her things had tags which I was oblivious to prior to implementing tags on my own products. It may be that our buyers don't find them as unsightly as we do, because they aren't "new" to them.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

Your right, I also did the same and looked at various labels. Seems everything has a label. I hope you are right about others not seeing that the labels are so unsightly.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

I thought hats did not need labels. Also, do purses with snaps, buttons or zippers need labels?

Thank you piccolinadesigns.
AnnasEmblemsNmore, all children items need labels due to the CPSIA law. It is a tracking issue. You don't need to label purses and such unless they are intended for children under 12 (I think is the age).

Here is a photo of my label:

I do not think it is a good idea to include an explanation for the label and I wouldn't do it.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

The woven labels were ordered from Everest Labels. I made the content labels myself.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

Do you have to treat them to prevent fraying? Do you mind telling me how the rn and reg no. work?

First, thank you for the compliment!

The label was printed on my inkjet printer using June Tailor Colorfast Sew-In Inkjet Fabric Sheets. The sheets are made of white woven cloth and are available at JoAnn's in a 10-pack. The fabric does not fray.

The type on the content label was typeset with InDesign, but any word processing or page layout program would work as well. The type is only 5.5 points but is still crisp and legible on the fabric even at the small size. The "Do Not Wash" symbol was drawn in Illustrator and imported.

The content label measures 1" wide x 2-13/16" long. When folded, the label measures 1" wide x about 1-7/16" long. There is 1/4" allowance at the top and bottom for sewing into the seam. After the label has been sewn into the seam, the visible portion is only about 1-1/8" long (about the size of a quarter). The labels are easily cut apart with a straightedge and a rotary cutter.

The RN (Registered Identification Number), obtained free of charge from the Federal Trade Commission, takes the place of my company name and address to conserve space. The number below the RN is my Stuffed Toy License registration number which is required to sell stuffed toys in the states of Pennsylvania and Ohio. To be licensed, I had to submit a sample for destructive testing along with the applications. The application fees were minimal.

The last line on the label is the production date. The month and year change according to the date the items are finished. Since I only make a few items per month, I make up a sheet of labels with several different production dates on it at one time.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

I will have to try to make my own labels. I would love for them to be small and inconspicuous. I don't like the way they look when having to write in the date with a fabric pen. I also now know what all the information on labels mean. I will look into acquiring a RN number as well. That would definately save space.
Thank you BarkingDogDesigns that was very helpful information.

You're welcome!

Here's a link to the FTC page:

Links relating to the RN are at the top of the right column under Registered Identification Numbers.

Marking for great info
Barking Dog great looking labels

Some I add the info and some I don't, it depends on how many different pieces are involved in the item.

Thanks for the detailed view of your labels and process to make them. I have a couple of questions: Your example label includes the 'do not wash' symbol, so What about washing these labels? do they fray or does the ink wash out?

-----------------
The "Do Not Wash" instructions pertain to the item to which the label was applied, not the label itself. The ink on the labels is colorfast after the labels have been heat set with a hot iron. I have not had any problems with the fabric fraying or the ink washing out.

Re: Letting your customers know why the label?

I'd have to agree with BarkingDogDesigns, you don't need to explain why the labels are there. If someone asks - fine then tell them. But explaining before hand almost sounds like apologizing for something you need to do by law. Keep it simple. :)
