Let's help each other get our children's items CPSIA compliant!

Brainstorm time!

I thought I had figured out what to do about my flower head baby headbands by sewing a contrasting felt center to the flower instead of the "now-forbidden" button. But as I was doing so, I realized that the flowers themselves may not be compliant. AACK!

They are just plain polyester fake flowers from the scrapbooking section or the flower section (dissected) but the packaging is long gone, so I don't know who to contact about getting compliance information.

Oh yeah, my instructions for the hobby horse have all sorts of non-compliant materials - gotta fix that too - especially the "buttons" thing.

So far, I know that baby slings made with steel rings are ok, (cotton fabric, coats and clark thread, and steel rings from the horse tack section - steel hasn't been made with lead because it compromises the integrity of the steel). But that's all. I suppose I could just sell slings again - that's what I started with.

What about you? What items are you SURE are compliant, based on the current law and your sources?

Thanks staceyJean!

I've got a little tab at the top of my browser where I've bookmarked your blog!

I'm just wondering if other sellers are going through the same things I am and not wanting to radically change their product line, but instead make what they are making work.

I'm working on Dill buttons, by the way - haven't heard yet!

i know that a little of both is going on... some sellers found that they were using supplies that were not compliant, and others found that their suppliers weren't cooperative, so they didn't know at all.

a few of them tested... others switched to new suppliers.

lots and lots of luck to you!

I'm fortunate that yarn has been included in the "exempt" list for lead-content. My knitted clothing products without buttons or similar attachments are compliant. I really haven't yet attacked the button situation, though I understand that some suppliers are testing/compliant for lead (and as the items are neither toys not child-care items, phthalate testing isn't required).
