Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

rainbowdolls says:
I really don't understand, why if a large company who can afford to do this testing, is already doing it, why we would have to do it again!? That makes no sense at all.
******

Because the law is worded that the "manufacturer" meaning us, not the supply manufacturer, but the "assemlby" or final manufacturer must do the testing.

Somehow the dolts who wrote this law on the commerce committee felt that there was/could be/magically/mythically/maybe/somehow something in the process of putting things together that might be causing the "lead" to infuse the product. Like my sewing machine needle is inserting lead into the zipper or my between needle is putting in to the button lead as I'm hand sewing it on.

Be very careful who you vote for, they may just not have enough sense to come in out of the rain.

I just got a GOC from Dill's buttons stating that all their buttons (except the ones with rhinestones) adhere to CPSIA testing requirements. If anyone wants a copy, convo me--

The Snap Source has certificates for their snaps. That is the only company that I've dealt with that can provide you a certificate. I still sent my own items away for testing though. It gives me the security that I can provide my own certificate.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

All right, by reading the original post & the last page here it looks like my bubble is getting burst. I so was hoping companies like "Michael Miller Fabrics" (dropping that name if it wasn't already done so in previous 800 posts) who are going to send me a letter stating their fabric has been tested & passed CPSIA laws was going to be enough. So even with that I have to get the final product tested myself? Sigh....

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

marking. I contacted Fire Mountain Gems about lead testing for components and if they meet CA regulations. They seem unable to provide the proper paperwork so that I can sell my jewelry in CA. Here's what they wrote me:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding H20-6737FD. We currently purchase items from vendors throughout the world. We consistently screen and test the products we receive for lead content and then indicate whether they meet lead free or lead safe standards in the description. This is the only information that we are able to provide.
It is recommended that jewelry-making products not be used for items made for infants, toddlers or other young children, who may be more likely to place these items in their mouths, and may present a choking hazard. Please be aware we do not sell, or promote the sale of any product to, or for, any child under the age of 15.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

They do -

Dear David,

Thank you for taking the time to contact Minwax. We appreciate your
inquiry.

Under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), our obligation
is to have available a "General Certificate of Conformity" for each batch
of the various products we manufacture. We have a General Certification of
Conformity (GCOC) for Consumer Products made after Nov. 11, 2008 available
through all of our normal internet document distribution channels.

To find the information you are looking for, use the full batch code
(stamped on the container and starts with MW) for the product to request
"Batch Certification" through www.paintdocs.com. This will be the easiest
way for you to have on hand the documentation you need for the various
batches of our products you have. Please remember that the batch code has
to contain MW followed by four numbers and then more letters (typically one
or two).

I hope this information is useful. Please let me know if you have any other
questions by replying with message history,

Sincerely,

Jessica

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I run a website called Unanimous Craft (http://www.unanimouscraft.com) where you can create lists of resources for indie businesses. You could each make listings for your suppliers who test and use a tag that the group has decided on -- like "CPSIA suppliers who test" -- then, people can just click on that tag to get a list of everyone who tests.

Seems like it could be useful for your project so I thought I'd throw that out there. Feel free to get in touch with my over convo to figure out the best way to go about it.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I feel this needs bumped. I only made it to page 21 so forgive me if this one is listed.

KAM Snaps : http://www.urbanfinds.com/kamsnaps/images/certificate2012.jpg

I know I saw on a diaper supply site that OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification was not recognized by the government BUT:
http://www.cpsc.gov/cgi-bin/labsearch/
http://vietnamscout.com/textile/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=182:oeko-texr-certifica...

Those two links prove it is recognized.

Good Morning,

I purchase my buttons from www.Doll-Clothes.com and received a Certificate for each color button. Also, www.snapsource.com supplies a Certificate as well for their snaps.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

This thread is wonderful! Thank you all! I will contribute as well. I'm still trying to figure out the labels for my headbands. I live in California and I do use Swarovski, but very limited. So confusing, and I think this is worse than the health laws for my chocolate company that I used to have. lol

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I am currently going through CE testing and marking again to comply with the new regulations under EN71 1-3 (I am in the UK) and hopefully also with CPSIA. I am in the process of putting my technical files together and have already obtained lots of certificates from Fabric manufacturers. I am part of a Facebook group that is currently testing fleece and ribbons.

But I haven't been able to find any info on Bondaweb/fusible web. Can someone tell me whether it's safe to use on plushies and where I can find a certificate?

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Does anyone have the papers from Favorite Findings Buttons they could forward to me? I've emailed them 3 times and called them too. They tell me they have the info and will send it tomorrow. Tomorrow never comes!

Hugs,
Gina
