Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

i know there's a couple lists, but i have this need for organizing when i'm under stress... so, i'm working on organizing the suppliers.

some have not been added.

ONLY suppliers that have promised info, and test will be added to my blog.

but, some haven't answered, so, just because they are not there, doesn't mean they are not compliant. i may start a list of those that have expressed no desire to test.

i encourage you to comment and let us know what info you have from suppliers you use on the list, and additional info.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

YKK has an on-going testing regime for their zippers, don't know if this was posted yet.

JHB Buttons is getting back to me. They are a distributor, not a manufacturer, but their buttons mainly come from Europe, and they have much stricter standards than the cpsia.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Info from FIRE MOUNTAIN GEMS - I have been using some of their beads as accent but they state on their "Customer Service" page that "none of their items are intended for use by children". This is the link:

http://www.firemountaingems.com/customerservice/csdocs.asp?docid=CSTMRSRVCLEAD

I did still go ahead and email to ask if they will be making an official statement (as they acknowledge California's Prop 65 regarding lead levels).

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

staceyJEAN: I just finally clicked on your link. I foolishly thought I had added everyone to my own spreadsheet. I'm so pleased to see Dritz on your site. I just posted in another thread that my final worry, as far as my supplies were concerned, was the Dritz pearlized buttons. So, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

all these companies have replied to SOMEONE about their intentions to test and supply documents. but, i'm not sure if anyone has any documents in hand.

in my own experience, my suppliers said yes, yes! they are on it, and watch their websites.

be sure to contact your suppliers with your individual concerns, to make sure your specific supplies are being tested.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I'm still shocked about the bad attitude from Alexander Henry. I do believe that testing at the supplier level will be the resolution to this law. Can they possibly be unaware of how many of us there are buying their fabric?

not sure if this is of any help, but here is the list of jewelry suppliers who responded when asked about compliance for the lead content in jewelry components legislation brought in by California last year

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I really appreciate the link ebbandflo. I was helpful in finding suppliers.

I am here so far by using this thread:
I have found fabric that tests.
I have found beads that test.
I have found velcro that tests, and velcro that doesn't.
I have found onesies and clothing blanks that test.
I have found paint and glue that test.
I have found snaps that test.
I was told over the phone that buttons are tested but am still waiting on the email for proof.
No elastic, ribbon, fusing, yarn or leather.
Thread, some fabrics and felt are working on it and hope to have something up in the week. Someone said that yarn possibly was working on it too.

Alright folks, so we really need elastic, ribbon, fusing, and yarn. Lets get to it and find someone so that all have our supplies covered!

I believe the contact information for those that test is being gathered on a couple blogs.

Great work everyone! Let's keep going!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

i have one yarn lead from the thread, and it looks like a couple ribbons.

i'm going to email, and call, personally, once i get my list in order... and confirm as many as i can. also, i'll keep watch, and as the conformity statements are posted, i'll add links to them.

and any msds links i find.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Are you still going to have to put tags in the items with all the batch numbers on them? I'm confused, or are you just saving yourselves from anyone coming back at you for being liable for there child and lead?

errr, about this but great researching to get all your suppliers, this is really fantastic work.

is it me, or does... lead and lead really mess with people's heads right now.

it all looks like lead... which is leading me to believe i am going a little nuts.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

empress... in my personal mission, whether we third party test, component test, or whatever, if my suppliers aren't compliant, my products don't pass. and that means i wasted money on supplies AND testing.

plus, this has really made me rethink what i use... tho, i was always under the impression my products were safe, and so far, they all are.

knowing, instead of guessing... is pretty nice.
