Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Has anyone found a onesie supplier that tests? Like Gerber? I looked on the Carters site and I didn't see any.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I just got this from THREADART - where I sometimes get ribbon.

Thank you for contacting Threadart. At this time were are not doing any lead testing. If you need further assistance, do not hesitate to ask.

Sincerely,
Customer Service
http://www.threadart.com

StaceyJean - must agree - I have a background in paediatric healthcare so I did often think about choking hazards etc but in someways this has felt like a "responsible" exercise and feels good to know for sure our products are safe - if only we can get a complete list of suppliers!
Perhaps it will make suppliers re-think their actions if more of us email and ask the question. Otherwise, they'll soon enough realise that we have taken our business elsewhere.

I thought I posted this a few days ago but this is the response I got from RIBBON RETREAT (and may soon be getting all my business)
Thanks for your e-mail! We're still working on our Product Safety page. It will have all the information you need regarding the new CPSIA law. We have a lawyer looking at the law for us so we will know for sure what we need -- as well as our customers.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thanks again!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

so far, there's a ribbon supplier that tests, and should provide proof at some point.

i encourage you to contact suppliers on your own behalf, because it really helps them understand the numbers of people affected.

here's the section for ribbon:

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I have sent inquiries to cheeptrims and also stretchrite in regards to their elastic, thanks for the info on the ribbon, I will have to take the ones that don't test off my childrens items. I am still working on the updated list, will pass it on to you sugarplumtree once I get it done so we can cross reference any items we both might not have.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Technically any company who manufactures product should have what is called a MDS sheet. This had, when I used them, all kinds of testing and ratings. And companies you purchase items from are suppose to be able to supply them upon request. I am not sure lead and the plastic test is on them.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I see on the compliance list that for JoAnns they only say the "Kids section". What does that mean? How do you define the kid's section?
Are flannels with childrens patterns safe then? I know a lot of people who use them for making baby receiving blankets...

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

germandolls, in a previous post someone said that if you go to the store and identify the fabric you might already use, they can pull the MDS sheet to see if it has had the testing.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

i rewrote to all the suppliers on my site so far... that had been mentioned as having compliance and willing to share.

i shot one form letter off to a bunch of them.

i'll share whatever i get back. i'm calling DMC tomorrow. i haven't added them to the list, because i have not heard from them. so i'll call.

where are my sock people? anyone having luck? the two brands i use haven't replied.

i don't want to list them until i have assurance.

i'm going to call them, too... tomorrow.
