Let's help each other out.

I am hoping that I can rely on the supplier's component testing of the fabric, buttons, thread, velcro etc. I realize that the law is not written this way, and I am supposed to redo it on the final product, but I am hopeful for an ammendment. In which case, I want to have all my ducks in a row.
Today I was chasing down numbers of suppliers. What a headache! All I got today was that my buttons are tested and OK for children. Great...I can make something out of buttons only?
Phone numbers and a person are rediculously hard to find. If this law does get changed, do you think that the suppliers will make it easier to get this information???? I have spent the WHOLE day on it!!!!! Anybody out there who has actually gotten a hold of person and knows some numbers to call would be greatly appreciated. I can't even figure out who makes a ton of my fabric because I bought them at Joann's who doesn't mark the bolt. Even the manager couldn't find it for me!!! How sad is that? Even if I knew of a couple of fabric makers that tested, that would help, because at least I could use them. I would just switch fabrics to companies who have tested.
I need information on:
Beads (people who bead in CA, how do you get this information????? I know you have to have it by law.)
Velcro
Cotton Fabric
Ribbon (anyone gotten a hold of Offray?)
Buttons (I did get a contact here who is emailing me the cert)
Elastic
Felt
Fleece

Let's help each other out. Don't be stingy? Who did you call? Who was helpful? Who wasn't? It would help us all out greatly!

I'll go first:
Buttons:
I got a hold of Favorite Findings and La Petite Buttons.
The website is www.blumenthallansing.com
I found a link for phone numbers and I called the rep in CA, Carlos Dashti, who actually answered. He said that the line Favorite Findings (sold and Walmart and Joann's) tests because it's used on children's items. He was happy to email me the results. His number was (213)400-2929. They have other reps for other areas on there too under the contact page.

great work everyone... I hadn't even thought about this!
Keep writing letters and e-mails to everyone you can think of in legislation, and the media... lets not forget to keep trying to get this law changed.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Here's a couple more companies I've corresponded with:

Fairfield Processing, manufacturer of poly-fil, is working on a letter to it's customers to let them know that their products do not contain lead.

Darice, manufacturer of animal craft eyes and other craft supplies, has an extensive testing program in place to ensure their products are in compliance. Items are currently undergoing testing and certificates will be available online when the results are back from the lab. Stated, that as a rule, they do not use lead in their products.

Waiting to hear from Blue Moon Beads.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Here is what I received today from Amy Butler fabrics:

Hello and thank you for contacting Amy's studio. Please be sure and check out the CPSIA information we have added to our website. http://amybutlerdesign.com/mainmenu.php Click on the 'new' button. It is unreasonable to expect small businesses to pay for laboratory testing of fabrics. It is very expensive. The website lists ways to voice your concerns.
We have spoken with the manufacturer of Amy' s fabric and the testing complete by their lab determined no lead detected (ND). See attached. Amy's fabric is manufactured by Westminster Fibers.
Amy shares your concerns.

My best,
Linda Sandin

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

oh wow, sugarplumbtree, that is awesome. but I thought it didn't matter if the manufacturer of the components tested lead free, because apparently if you add amybutler fabrics to cotton thread it might turn into lead?

joking....

Actually, I think it becomes leaded as soon as you apply scissors to the fabric. Or is it when the white pencil first starts to mark it? So confusing!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I just got a MSDS from Faswell Corporation (my supplier for bulk hook and eye aka velcro) = no lead (huge surprise huh?) and I have a fax coming from the makers of Fabri-tac (Beacon Adhesives) = no lead! I have calls/emails into Dritz for my eyelets and JoAnn's for my fabrics (I deal with the main guys at the company so hopefully my good relationship there will work to my advantage). So, more to come I hope!

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I emailed Blumentahl Lansing Co. (they make La Mode buttons) and they assured me that they already have their products tested by a 3rd party lab.

As for documentation etc, I don't have any, just an email right now.

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

There is a statement on the website for Plaid. They make a number of paints as well as Mod Podge for those who use that.

http://www.plaidonline.com/articleDetail.asp?articleID=400

"Plaid has had its paint evaluated by a board-certified toxicologist; lead and other heavy metals are part of the evaluation process. In addition, there are no lead-containing chemicals used in Plaid’s paint manufacturing plant."

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

I got this today from Beacon Adhesives:

Dear Jenny,

Testing is underway, but be assured that none of our glues contain any form of lead whatsoever. As far as the Phthalates are concerned, over two years ago we switched to the version allowable by today’s standards. I will send you out up dated MSDS when they are complete. But you Beacon glues is safe and is made in the USA. NO Lead!

Thanks, Mike

Re: Let's compile a list of suppliers who test!

Thanks for sharing everyone! I'm still working on some of the things I use. I usually just buy whatever fabric I find that I like, so no main supplier. Hopefully they'll just exempt fabric soon & get on with it!

Does anyone have a phone # for Dritz? I haven't been successful in finding one.
