Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

I just bought some snaps and a snap setting tool for bibs I will make. Sounds like if I want to avoid having to test, I will have to figure out another way to fasten the bib. Buttons are out too. Can I use velcro? Or a bias tape tie? This will affect how the design will look and I may have to redo the bib design.

As far as I know unpainted stainless steel snaps don't need to be tested. If component testing passes Kamsnaps.com already tests theirs. HTH

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

The only thing that you mentioned that will need testing is the buttons. Cute Embroidery .com has just put out some embroidered buttons that I am wanting to try. The stainlees steel is heated to such a high temp. that any lead is burned off.

Thanks twinkletoes for the heads up on Kamsnaps. I will no longer use Dritz products because they will not test their own products

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

Manufacturer testing/certification is fine for now, but if you're thinking long term (i.e. after February 2010) you'll need to either have them 3rd party tested or find another option...

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

You may want to rethink your closure strategy. From what I understand you must have items tested after February 2010. If there is any small metal part involved there is no way around it. Growl!

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

Any small part will need to be tested for Strength attachment in addition to lead...buttons, snaps, etc. I think that the tie might pose as a "strangulation hazard" as well..

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

I'm not aware of the February 2010 regulations. Who's coming up with these rules, the owners of testing labs?

I've read a lot on the CPSIA but I must have been dozing when it came to February 2010.

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

SeamsSewSweet, no not the testing labs, but the US Senate and House of Represenatives came up with these laws. They in turn gave the CPSC the right to oversee & interpet the law and your State's Attorney General the right to enforce it & proscecute under it.
As for the Feb 2010 deadline that's when all product catergories not currently required to 3rd party test must begin the independant lab testing. Unless they producer is using items from the exemption list as 100% of the raw materials that go into their product. The various deadlines are here in Table A: Compliance and Testing Timetable at http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/manufacturers.html#q4

Re: Just bought snaps and snap setting tool

my cowgirl snaps are certified safe for children's clothing. this is manufacturer based certification - not sure if you would have to get the individual ones you buy tested after feb 2010.... but growl indeed.... i hope not. :-)
