Help! I've Been Away for a Few Days

I've been away and haven't checked on things for a while. Would someone please tell me what has happened in the last five days? I'm Sooooo confused. Can I sew my products or not?

Re: Help! I've Been Away for a Few Days

I do have a back up plan if I have to give up my children's things. I read the thread that rustichome gave me. Does it mean fabric and thread are exempt, because that's all I use?

Re: Help! I've Been Away for a Few Days

Why can't they make it simple and just list items that are exempt and those that are not?

I think you're okay with the fabrics and threads, as long as they're tested lead- and phthalates-free. I still can't get an answer on the velcro.

How about plastic buttons?

Re: Help! I've Been Away for a Few Days

Chronic as I understand it plastic buttons are one of the things that had intermittent and unexplained testing failures, so they are not and most likely will not be exempt. The only buttons I'm using right now are vintage, I'm planning on noting the items they're on as "13 and up". I'm wondering what other button materials we could use though--bone? Wood? Is bone even used any more or are the buttons that look like bone actually molded plastic? Someone on another thread mentioned the idea of using loop and ball closures instead of buttons, using little crocheted balls and crocheted chains or ribbons for the loops. The only problem with that is, could the balls be seen as a choking hazard?

Re: Help! I've Been Away for a Few Days

I think the fabric and thread issue comes right down to really being sure that your fabric, thread, velcro, etc. are Phthalate and Lead free. Although, that the CPSC, won't be hunting us down during the stay, we will be liable for any product with those substances.
The lead issue, from what I understand had some fabric excemptions, while the Phathalate portion of the law, does not have fabric exemptions, for any toys, (even fabric) for children under 12, or child care products (even fabric) for children under 3 years of age, such as baby quilts, bibs etc.
Just my take however, it is so messed up everyone is totally confused. Maybe Admin is still trying to figure this all out like the rest of us!
