I have been researching these 2 labels like crazy the past 2 days . I am not sure if I have it 100 % correct . I thought I did but then realized some of my information is repetative . Perhaps I made a mistake? Can someone tell me if this is right, or if I have to much info or not enough on the labels. Thanks!

FTC Label:

Front of tag:
RN# or business name
100 % Cotton ( fiber contents)
made in USA of imported fabric

back of tag:
cleaning/care instructions
batch #
date made
SF, Ca (specific location made)

CPSIA Label:

date made
place made ( USA)
batch#
cohort info ( ??) is this my business name or web site address?)

Just curious if the batch & date had to be on both . I am going to print some at home & try to order the other. However if both require all this info like the date & batch then it seems I will have to make both myself to fill this in properly as I go.
Thanks for reading!

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

I order from Miss Label, Seanlabel (etsy store) and Charm Woven Label. I have also been experimenting with printing my own labels. Cotton poplin has worked the best so far. The ink bleeds a bit on silk. I am looking at ready-made childrens clothing and taking ideas from them. Some have two labels and some have all the information on one label.

Has anyone found a pen that you can write on your labels with that is approved? I would like to leave certain areas blank so that I can have one large order

Also, if I read the rules correctly, if say you embellish something with a different kind of fabric, if it takes up less than 5% (I believe) of the product then you do not have to list it on the FTC label correct?

Beverly or Mary,

I just looked at the FTC website & did I read it right, if you custom make children's clothes (I make tutus) I am exempt from a care label inside the garment? Right now I have a small post card that is attached to the hanger with care instructions. Thanks!

This is from the website:

Exemptions

The following items don't need permanent care labels, but must have conspicuous temporary labels at the point of sale:

Garments custom-made of material provided by the consumer.

15%, NOT 5%

Brittany, I just reread and it is less than 5%. 15% refers to embellishments.

Anita,

Is the customer providing the tulle, and you are just assembling the tutu? If that is the case it appears that you are free from the care label. You are not free from the CPSIA label though, that is a seperate law.

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

Beverly, are the stock woven labels folded? It's hard to tell what they're really like by the pictures. Thank you!

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

The size labels are folded, the FTC labels are flat. They are very soft,

Thank you Beverly! I really want to stock my shop with baby/kid hats that I crochet. I got overwhelmed thinking about the CPSIA regs untill I read this thread. You've given so much valuable (understandable!) info.

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

I'm thinking of making my own labels, as I'm only making few clothing items for now, and it's not really economical to have ready-made labels at this point.
(Although the labels price is reasonable, I might have to pay more than the label cost for shipping to Hawaii)
But I saw on this thread that there's a specific size/font required for FTC label.
Where can I get that information?
I saw the specific requirements for fur items but not on regular clothing?

Also if I use printable fabric and used fray-check, does fray-check have to be tested? (or obtain certificate of compliance?)

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

Just as I think I understand what I need to do for labeling I read more and get more confused. I have put my Etsy shop on vacation until I can get this figured out and receive my labels. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

Since my shop is on vacation until I get this addressed all I want to do is place an order(s) for all the labels I need to comply with all government rules. Right now I can not explore making my own.

So I need to address all labels needed for making and selling 100% cotton infant and toddler clothes.

I have gone to NWTags that Beverly suggested back a bit in this thread. And #7 also works for me as do the size labels. Are these two labels all one has to do to FTC?

And what else do I need to order to comply with CPSIA?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

If you look at first few posts of this thread, you'll also see info on CPSIA as well.
From MaryE's post...
-------------------
FTC label needs at the very least:
- Your company's registered business name, or a brand/label name with RN#
- Fiber content by %
- Fiber's country of origin
- Washing and care instructions
Other info may be required depending on the exact fabrics use like registered trademark info for fabrics that are followed by a ® or the international symbols for care instructions.

www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus21.shtm

For a crafter the CPSIA tracking label must include at minimum :
* Your company's or shop name, or searchable RN# (not required to repeat if able to find it elsewhere permanantly on the product like on a FTC care and content label).
* The city, state/territory, & country where the item was completed.
* Contact information, website, or business registered address. - If different from where made an address or unsearchable by the city & state info so a consumer can contact the manufacturer / designer.
* At least the season with year of manufacture or date of completion of the product, but the governmnet would prefer you to be more specific.
* If you make repeats of the designs then you may also need a batch number, but only if the pieces are mostly identical looking and made of the same looking raw materials as each other.

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

It is very overwhelming...
I thought I got it down, but bumped into not being able to find any insurance company that offer liability coverage for childrens items.
I feel so defeated and thinking of not making childrens item anymore. So sad... :(

Mika is it that risky that you think one also have liability insurance coverage for making children's items?

Re: FTC & CPSIA Labels - Specific Info on Labels

I didn't think about it until I bumped into some thread talking about insurance.
Then I just got scared reading through different stories... It's just for my peace of mind.
If I can get an insurance at reasonable cost I'll probably start making clothing again.
I just love sewing them!
