What does etsy have planned for 2/9/09. Are we all suppose to shut down our shops, pull all childrens items? Wait until we are shut down, what do we do?
I hear ya bobbin! Trying to get any work done is so depressing right now, what with people walking on eggshells not knowing if they're going to have to shut down in the next few weeks. It's sad, but hopefully with things getting more media attention we'll get things fixed soon.
That would be nice! I know I have it posted on my blog and have emailed all of my customers and some of them emailed me back saying they voted. The problem is alot of consumers do not know abt it! I spoke with a boutique owner the other day at Hobby Lobby and she had NO IDEA!! To be honest she did not care either. She said she was staying open and selling!
If I were etsy I wouldn't make a statement about letting sellers keep selling their now illegal products. That would only draw attention to it. So, I say no news is good news! I plan on selling atleast until August and then seeing how things are going. Since they haven't really defined their regulations yet, I'm not going to worry until they do. Oh, and I just got a response from a craft fair in March letting me know I'm accepted. Maybe they haven't heard about the new law? I don't know, but I'm just going with it! Wish me luck!
And good luck BabiesBeautiful with your show! I really feel like there's enough momentum going these days that will force the law to be postponed or amended or something. There's just been a lot of positive news lately.
I have been thinking about this situation all afternoon. We have written, done TV, and everything else. I am seriously thinking about making a telephone push, voice to voice. Our town has a business association and since we have several small businesses, perhaps start there. What about Chambers of Commerce. I haven't talked to the Governor yet. Saw him do a long TV piece on schools and where they get their funds and the audience was made up of teachers, financial people, principals, etc. Really interesting. Might ask what he is planning to do with books and games.
Here we are, bedtime again. Hard to get to sleep as a million things run through your mind. Well, it isn't going to happen tonight. I have just begun to fight. What a great week to restart!!!!
I have read and read on the forums the different aspects of this new law and then tried to wade through the law itself... I probably missed the answer to this, if there is an answer....if you make something such as a baby hat from yarn that is labeled for babies and has been tested by the manufacturer of the yarn would that qualify for this test? If you make baby outfits out of tested material wouldn't that cover everything? All you would need is the label from your supplies that state it was tested. Am I being naive in thinking this?

Thank you all so much for your input on this question. It has helped me ... I think ... I should have steam coming out of my ears from overload. Seriously, thank you all and stand strong.
How about our libraries? Won't they be affected. Might give them a call. How about book stores? I suppose they are getting the certification. We have a huge library in our town.

Yes, you would be required to test it as YOU are the manufacturer. I can almost bet you that the yarn companies will be changing their labeling...you'll see nothing that says it's "for babies"...yarn can be made into anything for anybody so why would they want to put themselves in a position to have to test every single different dye lot they make? If you make it into a baby item, you have to test it....
SweetGoodies says: as has been said many times before (for many different situations): Etsy's not your Mama ******************* Unfortunately, Congress feels they need to be our *mama* and protect us from ourselves.
I am going to try to get supplier certificates and put a thing on my store's Announcement. I may have to pull my items for a short while, while I get them in order, though.
Say that we comply and pull our stuff. I certainly won't be able to afford the testing. I can't see doing all of the certificates and labels and all the non-sense. That is not handmade, that is manufactured.
But what concerns me is what our emotional state will be. I can't stop creating things. I want to do items for kids. There are so many beautiful adult items on Etsy already. So when it gets to the point where our outlet for these items is shut off, the frustration level is going to build, the money we make will decline. I just see no way but continue to fight this stupid thing if it takes forever, regardless of the snipets they give us to apease us. I want total revocation of this law. Nothing more will do, nothing less.
Yes Libraries and book sellers are impacted by this law, maybe schools, can you say no more homeschooling, no more small private schools, no more child care facilities, not too mention the possible impact on public schools....
The American Library Association (ALA) is in "meetings" with the agency to try and clarify this law as far as books are concerned, as is the Book Publishers Association.
I don't know what's going to happen but on the Etsy Do's and Don'ts it says, "a seller may not list any item that violates the seller's local law... per Etsy's Terms of Use."

I was thinking of Guideposts magazine. They have a program where ordinary people can hand knit sweaters, and they will be forwarded to children overseas who are recovering from tragedies like earthquakes. Under the new law, people will no longer be able to give these sweaters/export that toxic waste. I plan to contact them and remind them about this law. Perhaps, since they are a magazine (both online and in print) they can reach a lot of people. Can you think of other programs like this one that will suffer? Perhaps there are more magazines that we can contact. Child safety is extremely important, but surely there is a better way to achieve it than by making charity illegal.
I recall reading in another thread that Etsy's stand on this is that it will not require a shop to close down unless it receives a directive from the CPSC that it must legally do so.
has anyone thought about doing a silent protest with signs and such during the inauguration? that would be a hoot. I would do it but Im in freaking alaska... waaaaay to far away
pin your stuffies and knitted sweaters and tshirts (like mine) ;) to signs that says toxic as of FEB 10th! or pictures of families that says I can't feed my family as of feb 10th!
