Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

So what I gathered from most of this information is that "labeling" is NOT required for wall hangings/artwork...however, we make Growth Charts and since kids will be getting near them, I have to make sure all the materials used for those don't contain lead or anything dangerous.

The only thing I can think of is the "coating" that our printer puts on our growth charts...and the "grommets" we use in them for hanging. Both of those things probably need to be checked and perhaps tested.

Anyone know anything about these 2 elements?

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

I think they would still need labels...anything intended for children under 12 needs CPSIA labels (and FTC labels if they apply)...

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Well, that's what I may be confused about..intended for children..growth charts are not really intended for children to "handle" or play with...just for standing next to to be measured by an adult.

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Thanks a LOT!!!! I have been struggling with this for the past month. I decided to open a super girly, girly online store to try to make a few extra bucks (since I'm a stay home mommy of 3 beautiful children). I would like to start with tutus, bows, wings, etc. I know my 5 year old girl loves that kind of stuff so I started making some for her and then I though "why not to sell some, too" Then I came across the nightmare of the CPSIA and the FTC and all the regulations (specially the CPSIA). So many tears and frustration later after trying to find exact information I found your beautiful and well explained post. There is a lot to read, a lot to comply with but I think it looks worst than what it looks. I even though or just giving up, but I'm don't quit before I give it a try so here I am, trying to find providers that will provide GCCs or COCs for elastic, ribbons, clips and all that good stuff.
For all those of you out there that are confused and tired of reading so much and thinking of quitting I tell you "DON'T!!!" You can totally do it. It seems like everyone here has the heart to help each other to succeed and answer questions to our fellow hand-crafters. Thanks you guys!!!
p.s- I'll try to help with answers as well as much as I can but I may also encounter a few questions here and there :)

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Babychick, If in doubt, I'd go ahead and make a sticker with your company name, or website (etsy store) and city, state, usa. And then write the date you made it. And think of your sticker as a promotional tool. Anyone who looks at your picture and admires it could contact you and buy one for themselves. I think we should look at the labeling as a means of advertising, now that we have clearer guidelines especially for small crafters.

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Ok. I think I'm good. Just using cotton/bamboo/etc. fabrics for my blankets. Just stuck on the DOM part of the label. I guess I will need to fill this in by hand but don't know what type of pen to use. I won't have a specific date to have printed on the labels. I didn't read anything that made it clear if the DOM needed to be Month/Day/Year or if Month/Year is fine?

I'm only doing month/year and keeping good records of those items I've made in my production log. For the pen, I use a fabric pen, but I've read others just use a ball point pen and it works fine.

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

This morning I'm getting 504 errors on every one of the government links in the first post. Does this happen regularly or is it a new occurence?

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

I have a quick question--where does quilters batting fall in this? If I use cotton batting, am I okay? I'm wanting to make some nap mats, so I want to make sure I'm "playing by the rules."

---Links work for me. But you can always google CPSIA to get to the CPSC and find the current info

---pretty sure batting falls under the exempt textiles. You should be fine.
