THIS from a major Company?

I wrote Lion Brand Yarn Company to get there phthalate and lead content of their Baby Vanna's choice yarn (mind you, it's marketed for Babies) and THIS was what I got:

"The CPSIA guidelines are delayed for one year by the government and it appears that changes will be made to the requirements so we will be waiting for further information about this topic.

With Warm Regards,

Ilana Rabinowitz

Lion Brand Yarn Company"

That does not sound good, or does it sound like they know the correct interpretation of the law either. YIKES.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Makes me wonder what might be in there if they are not going to offer the information yet.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Very disappointing. I use probably more Lion Brand than any other yarn for my projects.

Methinks we need to start putting pressure on them, just like did with Congress ... and still do. We need to keep our movement going!

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Let's organize something...maybe bombard them with emails or calls on a single day?

Personally, I can choose other yarn companies, and if you can too LET THEM KNOW THAT. :)

How discouraging. I do hope you all can get it sorted out. That sounds very unprofessional to me.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Well, if I didn't have to pay to test, I wouldn't either. Certain fibers have been ok'd. Acrylic was on that list.

Bobbinalong posted this link earlier.

I think it is page six that has the block of things now ok to use. It says ok to Yarns, dyed or undyed. Read it for yourself.

thanks annemusingdesigns!
i read that about the yarns, but since they were not natural or nylon, i wanted to make sure they didn't need to be tested.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

As a maker of children's products this whole thing is really scary. I was reading that a lot of major retailers haven't even heard of this band. Something has to be done for us little guys to survive.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

This doesn't sound scary to me at all. It sounds like Lion Yarns, a large corporation, has a handle on the situation. Not only are they not panicking, but they know their business and they know how to deal with the CPSIA people.
I would consider what they've said as an official statement and continue using their products with confidence. What more could we want?

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Their response makes sense to me, too. The law, for the most part and in many ways, *has* been delayed, yarn is on the "safe" list of products to use, and no one has to test right now. Sounds like the understand what's going on.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

If you watch the CPSC hearing on textiles, you'll see a lengthy portion by the Coats & Clark representative on behalf of all yarn makers explaining why there isn't lead in yarn. It's actually very interesting.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

Another slant on this. Does their baby yarn contain wool? There are some kids who are very allergic to wool. I grew up wearing wool sweaters. The days before acrylic. They itched, they were miserable.

I think we need to stop guessing about why companies or individuals do what they do. Everyone is getting antsy. We don't know why this company has selected to do this. It doesn't mean their yarn is bad or dangerous. It may all be from a financial standpoint. Perhaps they are just like us. They can't afford the equipment or find the labs to do the testing. They, too, have been given the stay. Why don't we all take advantage of it and take a more positive stance.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

I received the same response, trafalgar, and since they were one of the manufacturers of yarn I use, I pulled hats made by them in my shop (and told them this). Kind of disappointing, especially since Coats and Clark has been doing so much in this whole mess.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

As a mother of four kids, all grown, they all had allergies when they were young kids. Kids everywhere will have allergies to different things. Just look at formula and milk products. Look at peanuts. Look at all of the different foods. One of my kids was allergic to milk, wheat, eggs, peas, just to name a few. Hard when you have four kids all with different allergies. One was allergic to pine trees. It is extremely dangerous because they can begin to wheeze and are not able to breathe without a fast injection to counteract it. One was, and still is, allergic to chicken and turkey. He was working as a teen at a college in town. I received a call from the doctor to get there fast one day. I didn't even recognize him. He looked like a very old man. All covered in hives and wrinkles. To this day, he still can't eat these products. If you are a parent of a kid with allergies, you will know what I mean.

We, although we would love to, cannot "protect" every child from every thing they will meet in their little lives. This is where the parent comes in. Lead is something different. But so much worrying about yarn. Some kids will be allergic to wool, some to soy. Being able to have one yarn that everyone can be happy with sounds absurd to me. What we can do is to be sure that our descriptions exlain what our products are made of. Think more of keeping the little ones warm and comfortable. Make it clear to the parent what they are buying.

Re: THIS from a major Company?

On the other hand, maybe someone should tell them that because we ARE concerned what will occur over this next year... as well as how various states may handle things THIS year...

We will use yarn from companies that are already willing to test and share the results with their consumers.

It's not like Lion is the only yarn producer out there.

I took a look at the Coats and Clark website to figure out what brands they own, it looks like Red Heart, TLC, and Moda Dea. Anyone know of any others or is that it?

Re: THIS from a major Company?

You read my mind trin! I have some things listed that were made with Lion Brand, but mostly I use Coats and Clark's Red Heart and TLC lines. Mostly due to cost, actually--I've seen Lion Brand Homespun for over $5/skein while a comparably sized skein of Red Heart Classic was about $3 the last time I bought it.
