tadasana says:
AH! According to Table B, I can use yarn and fabric without testing.

I am still wondering about the velcro though....

___________

I believe velcro is exempt from testing. It's made from nylon or polyester which are exempt and on page 84 of the lead final rule doc (which was voted on and passed), it specifically mentions "hook and loop closures" under the appendix of possible exemptions

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Thanks so much. I was about to create items for children and was unaware of labeling requirements for crafters. Love to hear how other crafters are labeling crocheted items. Cecilia at Thirdway

Thanks so much! I've been really thinking about kids' stuff and whether or not I want to deal with all this hoopla. I enjoy making baby items but if it's too much hassle, it's not worth it for me. I just hope that not everyone who makes this stuff feels that way. I understand the need to protect our children...I have kids of my own. But there must be a balance somewhere.

Thanks again!

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

I am so glad to see this list. I wondered about selling my mini diaper bags/diaper clutches. Are these intended for children under 12--because they are actually used by the parent & not the child?? So confusing.

One more question--Is it ok to make burp rags & blankets from flannel & cotton & ribbon?? It seemed to be ok, just not sure.

what is the labeling all about? Does anyone have an example of how it should look??

thanks so much!

Diaper bags are iffy. They aren't intended for use by the child, but it's possible that a child would come in contact with it, chew on the strap or whatever. I'd follow the CSPIA on those, but you might wanna do a little more research to really find out about that.

Burp rags and blankets from those materials will be fine. you won't need to test. You will need to label.

Labels need to be permanently attached and include the following info:

business name
Business location
Date of manufacture

(website or contact info is also a good idea)

My labels are simple iron-on ones that I got from namemaker.com They are about 3/4 inch tall, 1 1/2 inches wide. Other people get ribbon type labels that you sew into the seam of the item (just like you see in clothing)

This is what my labels say.

I already have woven labels that I use with my biz name on them. For the DOM, I right it in with a sharpie.

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Can someone explain what the FTC requirements are. i have gone to that site from a couple of links and it doesn't want to work for me. Are they fabric content and care. Have I heard that I need to register through the FTC?

DO FTC tags really nee to be seperate from CPSIA tags. Plus I have my own logo tags.

I am thinking of combining- how could it be illegal as long as the info is included?

Also- where are you sewing the tags on? Are you doing it knowing that they will most likely be reooved by the consumer? (i.e. cheaper printed tags that come off as oppsed to nice woven lables.)

I don;t want my product to look cheap b/c of all these taggings!

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Thanks so much myblessedbaby!! Very thorough information. I feel much less confused now. I guess I will need to make some adjustments to my diaper clutches.

Does anyone know if it's ok to use velcro???

Thanks

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

I think its OK to use Velcro as long as you plan to have it tested....that might determine if you do or don't want to utilize that versus say a natural wood or shell button.

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Okay, I may have missed this in the article, but what about synthetic fabrics and felt? The exempt chart lists fabrics and yarns made from natural fiber, but doesn't mention what to do about synthetics.

I use Ecofelt in many of my products, made from recycled plastic. I also use fleece and minkee fabric. I would assume these products have already been tested, do I need to call the manufacturers?

Re: EVERYTHING you need to know about the CPSIA

Vaerina88--
Synthetic fabrics are ok too. I don't know about Ecofelt though, might wanna call on that one. The article below exempts synthetic fabrics, it's a draft ruling, but was voted on and passed.

ocstyles--

I'm pretty sure velcro falls under the exempt ruling. I answered this question a few pages back with a link to where it talked about 'hook and loop closures' Check that out. :)
