Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

I am working on some bibs, and they have snaps on them. The snaps are certified lead free, and I have the sheets from the supplier. Should I put in the description that they are compliant? Thanks in advance.

Dragonfly, I think that would be helpful. If I were a potential customer, I would definitely appreciate that information.

Dragonfly, what company do you get the snaps from, I also use snaps on my bibs and I guess am going to have to find out if they are lead free.
Thanks also in advance.

Thanks so much for all your responses. I get my snaps from snap source, www.snapsource.com, here is the link to the CPSIA information http://www.snapsource.com/whatsnew/whatsnew.php, I requested the safety sheets, and they sent me them. Thanks again!

I think it is a great thing to add to your description! I would find it very helpful when purchasing something for a baby. After Babies put everything in their mouth.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

For bibs I would not do that. Because bibs are also required to be tested for phthalates. So if you haven't done that testing, you aren't actually compliant.

Do you know what blows my mind? When shopping for bibs and such at Wal-Mart.. i see no description that they are compliant. Mind blowing.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

Compliance certificates are not intended for the consumer. Plus they aren't required in any way until next Feb.

I am not putting anything on my site for 2 reasons
1- there is actually wording in the law that prevents using compliance as advertising. I don't know whether or not this fits, but better safe than sorry.

2- the less said about this law, the better. I want to the law to be changed and so plan to cooperate with it as little as possible.

Most people haven't heard of this law anyhow. You could always say that your snaps are lead free without reference to compliance or certification.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

I had had a blurb about it in my eBay store, using the logic that people would appreciate knowing that my products are *safe*. I tried to use non-threatening, very open-ended wording that didn't offer opinions one way or the other; more for education than anything (and on the off chance a customer asked about it). However, a good friend of mine emailed me saying it was scary. I took it off.

I like mamafamilias idea of stating that your snaps or whatever are lead free. Keeps it quiet, but at the same time offering a bit of reassurance to customers.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

I am working right now on getting these certificates from the manufacturers of the products I use. I am planning on writing in the Policies part of my site that the items are compliant and if they want to see these certificates, please convo me. I will post these certificates on this forum when I get them!

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

Yeah- I agree - probably best to just state lead-free rather than using the word "compliant". Most people have no idea about the CPSIA- which I think is scary - a new law with such impact and most Americans have no idea what's going on. - Anyhow, I use lead-free clips for my hair bows- and have just recently asked my supplier for their certificates, but I don't even advertise that- if a customer asks I will supply them the info.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

Whoa!! BuggaLove brought up something that got my attention. If bibs are made of cotton only, no plastic or oil cloth, could they contain phthalates? I thought cotton, dyed and undyed, was ok. I thought I was safe to continue to make bibs. Maybe I'm not as safe as I thought. This has me very concerned since I have a sewing room full of bibs.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

Here we go again, letting doubt push common sense out of the way. The way this law is written, I think it could change, be amended at the drop of a hat. We could be compliant one day and not the next. What's to say something else will rear its ugly head and a whole new source of concern will consume the CPSC. As did the drywall.

When I was looking through some sites under the heading of CPSC on the internet the other day, they listed many people, mostly companies or heads of companies, that had violated the CPSIA law. I think it will be a matter of time until bogus certificates start flooding the industry.

Why not just think positive, make what you have been making (as Nancy Nord asks us to do) and stop worrying so much.

cotton is on table b... so i would think you would be fine, but am not an expert... perhaps bugga (or someone) could show us where it says all bibs must be tested? I can't seem to locate it.

Re: Did you put something in your shop about your items being compliant?

This is BuggaLove...

Bibs facilitate eating. It is my understanding that toys and all items that facilitate eating or sleeping are required to do phthalate testing in addition to the lead testing. I haven't seen any exceptions to the phthalate testing within those categories. Or maybe the exceptions for natural materials is for all testing. And since I don't make those items my research hasn't been focused on the phthalate portion of the law.
