I have been pouring over threads in this area for a good hour or more and I just want to see if I have this straight in regards to the items I want to list in my shop.

I am a crocheter and I adore making hats for little ones. The hats are made from llama, alpaca, sheep wool, cotton, bamboo, or other natural fiber blends.

The only embellishments I ever use on a hat meant for a child are crocheted or felted embellishments (such as flowers or other shapes). Never any buttons or things that could be a choking hazard for my children's hats. Are these sorts of embellishments okay?

I do however use buttons on hats that I make for teens. I assume this is allowed, because the item is not meant to fit or be used by anyone under 14. Do I need to label that in any special way?

Now, from what I have gleaned from other topics is that yarn is exempt from testing, or at least the yarns I am currently using, as they are not metallic in anyway. But they are not exempt from labeling.

Here is where I start to get a little fuzzy. From what I am seeing is that my hats will need to have two labels? One which lists my Name/Business, City/State, and the date on which I completed the item. And then I need a 2nd label with care instructions and fiber content?

Now, a hat meant for a newborn is not very big and putting two labels inside the hat just seems ridiculous to me. I can't use iron on labels because its yarn, it wont stick, so I have to sew something into the hat, and I can only imagine how two labels would irritate poor baby's head! And putting the label on the outside of the hat would just look goofy. Is this just how it is, or is there another way of going about this?

I'm so confused! Any help or clarification to anything I've said would be very appreciated! Just writing all this out I feel like I need a nap.

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

melvinbug - boy, do I feel your pain. Can someone please give me an exact example of what should be on a label for an acrylic crocheted baby item? I assume it has to be my shop name, address/location and the batch number or identifying number? I know that I don't need FTC testing or labeling on my baby item, but I have to have a permanent label for the CPSIA requirements. I have removed my baby hats from my shop for now.

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

KraftyPalette- Courtesy of BostonBeanies blog, here is an example of what your CPSIA tag should look like.

-Your company, shop name, or RN#
-The city, state/territory, & country where the item was completed
-The date of manufacture of the product
-If you make many of the same design then you may also need a batch number, but only if the pieces are identical looking and made of the same exact raw materials as each other and were made or completed on the same day (think hair bows and such)

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

Melvinbug - had to leave, but came back to see if anyone answered my plea. Thank you, Thank you. That helped so much. Now, all I need to do is figure out what material that I can print on thru my computer, and attach to the item. Or would it be simpler just to have a stamp made and use some satin ribbon? I'm sure someone has come up with a thread on this. If you know of any, direct me to them. Otherwise I will search the forums for info.

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

Wait, so what do you do if you buy vintage yarn that's missing its packaging?

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

Hi,
this is really useful for knitters too. Can I just check, does anyone know if these rules still apply if I am producing and selling the product from the UK?

Thanks

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

I have hand knitted and crocheted items and whatever I sell I place labels on. The last labels that I purchased have everything really that I'm supposed to have printed on the label. And they are small enough that they will look okay on a hat or booties inside.
For my larger items I also sew on one of my business logo labels. On the smaller items I only use what is required.

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

Oh my goodness... I make jewelry to sell here on Etsy but I also crochet baby blankets, sweaters, hats, etc. for my friends and family. I add lots of embellishments to them but had no idea about all this labeling business and hazards. This was so helpful just for that and I won't be adding embellishments anymore either... oh my goodness!

Re: Crocheting Baby Items

This is all so confusing regarding CPSIA and FTC labels. I have read and reread the info on each Gov. site and read many of the forum posts.
Please tell me if my simplified interpretation is accurate that at least for hats alone the FTC label is not required unless the hat is made of wool. The CPSIA exempted materials include yarn and a hangtag with the fiber type and care instructions will fill requirements???
Trying to figure this out is beyond frustrating.
Thanks in advance for taking the time to answer my questins
