It looks like they've exempted wool, cotton, pearls, silk and gemstones...I'm off to find the CPSC memo

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

Great news! I hope the memo from CPSA is just as encouraging, whenever it's released.

Love it MiniMonster. I may just have to make a toy police wool ball with lots of mini balls behind bars.

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

frogleg that would be great. Would you have to have each pack of snaps tested?? Also does one snap mean one test or three if you use pearl snaps....bottom of snap, snap itself and then the pearl part??? Just wondering. I use pearl snaps.....Need to research this gal...

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

Well, all of my shoes are in bright colors, and the felt is made out of recycled bottles. I guess I can switch to wool felt and they can all be beige. So much for going green and original. It's a start, but the law itself needs to change. Besides, I use buttons, ribbon, and velcro. Dang! So it still doesn't help much.

RurhtCreations, the initial memo talked about undyed "natural fibers." So I think it would apply to anything made exclusively of those fibers - including fabric and yarn? That's just a guess, though. And remember that it has to be undyed/unpigmented.
----
Well then I'm still screwed....hopefully they'll exempt dyes that already comply with other CPSC rules eventually, at that point I think we'll be OK.

The other day I emailed the websites I order my yarn from to see if they have any certificates I'd be able to request with my orders, haven't heard anything from one and got an auto response from the other saying "a live person will contact you soon".

Oh, and I got an email today from the PBS show Frontline, I had emailed them suggesting CPSIA as a possible topic. The email said the story idea is being reviewed by their editorial staff for possible inclusion in a future broadcast. It's about time, I emailed them over a month ago!!!!

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

hmm
So, even if I dye things using kool-aid, that is still not exempt...

Still so frustrating. I have been wary to list much of anything since I heard about all this a while ago. I am off again to harass people in my network to get vocal too.

I really appreciate all the updates I read on etsy, thank you.

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

we need to come up with a system of listing codes to do black market children's sales through our etsy shops.

hmm..

"totally grown up object of amusement" = toy
"XXXXXXXS 80's retro bodysuit style shirt" = onesie
"strap for object for oral use by teenager at raves, only" = binky strap
"endangered species soft fiber sculpture" = teddy bear
"dietary aid- artificial (and fat free!) food. excellentsource of fiber!" = felt food

Are there really a lot of kid's toys created out of pearls and silk?? Seems like there is a lot more needing to be done.

OK, has anyone heard of smartmama? I stumbled upon her somewhere in all this talk and she says that she can do testing for $5 per item (i believe it was).

We chatted and I brought up the point that most of my items are custom...so could I just test a swatch from the bolts of fabric I am working with, thread, snaps, etc? She said quite a few of her client had suggested that. It is "reasonable" testing.
------
I've been contemplating sticking to solely US-made supplies, I wonder if that would be considered a "reasonable testing program"? It's not technically testing but I figure US made supplies would be more likely to conform to the CPSC regulations already being enforced. Conforming to the spirit of the law if not the letter, know what I mean?

I wonder if my items could be considered OOAK? Other than the flower pins and granny square hats I only have one instance where the same pattern was used for two items, and I made those different sizes.

punkin...thats my point, the CPSC didn't exactly go out on a limb by exempting GEMS and silk. However, it is a little crack in the dam

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

What a novel idea blynkenandnod! I thought abt selling the fabric to make a bib and then selling my sewing services to actually sew it for them. Not sure it would fly but hey if it is a custom work who is to tell somebody what they can and can not do with their fabric as long as they arent selling the final item....

Re: CPSIA votes to exempt certain materials...

i think the little leaks like that are totally signs of the disgust and turmoil within the CPSC regarding what they've just be handed.

i almost wonder if they are interpreting everything so strictly just to stir the pot and force congress to revisit the regulations.
