I am SO confused!!

For my CPSIA labels I have:
my business name and contact info.
Care instructions
What the shirts are made of (cotton and polyester)
DOM
Batch # info

What do I need on my FTC labels? I read the FTC website info and I'm still confused. Where do I put the FTC label and what is supposed to go on it????????

I don't mean to over run all the threads, but is there a way we can protest this? What would be effective? I'm all ears!

TRUST me...this is all being protested. There is a really good blog about it out there but I can't remember the name. Something about incubator.

Thank you jewelrydesignsbyME

That's the one, plus many others. For alot of us, this has been an ongoing nightmare for over a year now. I stopped designing and selling for most of last year because of it all.

(I am UpcycleBaby as well)

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

A friend of mine has one, longer label for both CPSIA and FTC. She puts the information for both on the front side, with a space between them. (The CPSIA information at the top, a space, and then the FTC info. below.) That might be one thing to try.

I'm not ready with labels yet, but am working on it.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

The only thing the FTC requires on the front of the label is the country of origin. (ie. "made in USA of imported fabric" for example) It must be in a prominent spot like the neckline of a shirt, or the waistband of pants. Some customs offices require a sewn-in label with country of origin - so keep that in mind if you plan to ship outside the USA.

All other FTC info can be on the back of the label (fiber content & washing, etc) Think about a jacket with a label at the neckline, and another in the side seam. You see it all the time.

Also, be careful about using store bought clothing as an example for labels, since FTC fines manufacturers for breaking label laws all the time.

All this info is in a few web pages at the ftc website
http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/business/textile/bus21.shtm

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

oh no! This is all so very overwhelming! I didn't even know about these laws and had been given the idea to put my art kids onesie, which she informed me i cannot use that word, good grief. If i am buying the onesie that already is labled and ironing on the pic on front do i need to put additional labels on these???

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Yes ... You will need cpsia labels and maybe FTC labels
as well. You will also have to comply with all of the cpsia guidelines
regarding your art being transfered ( the ink will need to be exempt or you will
need test results from the manufcturer). It is best if you
check both the FTC and cpsia websites for more information.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Well, to satisfy my curiosity I did go shopping to look at other people's labels. I looked in the underwear and also the sweater department. I see that they sew the labels into the sweaters using a straight stitch. Okay, great, I can handle that!

I see the thongs, and go to take a peek. They use a lot of iron-on labeling in panties these days, but some fabrics can't take the heat and on those the labels are rather smallish, and small print. Labels are sewn in the side seam or with the elastic. Okay! I'm feeling more professional. I see they use a lot of what looks like interfacing for labels, and I even saw one that looked like muslin. Patting myself on the back for sure now.

I go to the fabric shop and found something that just might work and won't have the fraying issue for printing my own labels. Must remember to use smaller type, though, on account of most of my stuff isn't all that big.

If this works, I'll get back with you and let you know what I used and how I did it.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

I was on the HP site reading about printing labels on fabric for handmade toys. They said to use a zig zag or an overcast stitch around the edges due to the fraying of cotton and muslin.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Ok, so what do we do if we're using 2 different types of fabric? I'm using one fabric that is 100% cotton, but the other fabric is 100% polyester. Do we need 2 FTC labels?? All of our blankets are going to look like 'taggies' after all of this! ;) Not to mention, having all of these tags on baby blankets is really going to make them look ridiculous!! UGH!

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Babymae, are you saying one side of your blanket may be cotton and the other side is polyester?? If so, then your tag could say, Face 100%cotton, reverse (or backing) 100% polyester.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Here's a cheapie tip for folks making their own labels (sorry if its already mentioned in here) - don't bother with the special iron on paper, just buy yourself a roll of freezer paper - cut out a piece 8.5" x 11", put the shiny side down on your fabric of choice (I used $1.99/yard muslin) and iron it on, it sticks great and goes right through the printer no problem.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Am I correct when I say that the following statement (taken from the FTC site) is saying that the items below don't need to be labeled? "Labeling is not required for other products not specifically mentioned in the statute or rules, or for non-textile products or components, including:"

Listed below are bags, including tote bags, cosmetic bags, diaper bags, coasters, eyeglass cases, flowers made of fabric, holiday decorations and ornaments....and it goes on and on...

So if I make a bag (or one of these other items), it need not have an FTC label?

Thanks for the clarifications!

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Lonis, they don't require an FTC label but if they are for children 12 and under they still need the cpsia tracking label. I wish you the best!
