CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

I am SO confused!!

For my CPSIA labels I have:
my business name and contact info.
Care instructions
What the shirts are made of (cotton and polyester)
DOM
Batch # info

What do I need on my FTC labels? I read the FTC website info and I'm still confused. Where do I put the FTC label and what is supposed to go on it????????

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

The CPSIA tracking labels are required on all childrens item producted after Aug 14th 2009 you need a permanantly attached tracking label according to the CPSIA. This label's purpose is strictly so when the CPSC issues a recall on a product there is an easily identifiable and similarly formated label that any adult can readily read to see if that specific item is on the recall list.
For a crafter the CPSIA label must include at minimum :
* Your company, shop name, or RN#
* The city, state/territory, & country where the item was completed
* The date of manufacture or completion of the product
* If you make repeats of the designs then you may also need a batch number, but only if the pieces are mostly identical looking and made of the same exact raw materials as each other and where made or completed on the same day

The FTC label needs at the very least:
- Your company, shop name, or RN# (yes it a duplicate of the CPSIA info)
- Fiber content by %
- Fiber country of origin
- Washing and care instructions
Other info may be required depending on the exact fabrics use like registered trademark info for fabrics that are followed by a ® or the internation symbols for care instructions.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

If I read the CPSIA information correctly, some items are exempt from the labels...like items exclusively worn on the head (headbands, hair clips, hats... except if the product is made of wool.) CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG jewelrydesignsbyME!

I agree PieCircusDesigns...this is RIDICULOUS!

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

The only correction I'm going to make is that statement refers to the FTC care and content labels not the CPSIA tracking labels. As of right now there are no exemptions for the CPSIA tracking labels just a statement that if the tracking label does not fit on a product or would interfere with the function of the product it must still appear on the the packing for the product.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Good grief Charlie Brown!!!

So, if I hand knit a hat for a child, I have to have a label that has a batch # even though it is definately not a batch item, fibver content, and a date of completion?

I will go broke having labels printed. Some people have "way" to much time on their hands thinking all this up. Don't get me wrong, I think kids ought to be safe and we ought to have reasonable expectation that our products are safe, but come on. There is such a thing as regulating businesses right out of business. Then where are we going to be? Sewing fig leaves togehter for clothing? Oh... That has already been done, back in the garden of Eden.

Is the CPSIA going to require me to label for adults as well?

I am about to pull my hair out!!

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Just made cute Easter fabric storage bins that I realize I cannot afford to sell because of having to label them with TWO labels now. I was following the CPSIA threads last year and decided then to stop making children's items and just do adult items. I got the bug again to do a few children's storage bins, but looks like it won't be worth it. So sad...a niche in the market and I can't afford to take advantage of it! And what does the creator of custom items do now?

I know what I am doing. I am crying hysterically and pulling my hair out. I am almost bald now. I may have to purchase a wig to look human again.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

The FTC labels are about including care and content on fiber and fabric based products. It is a law that that started on the books back in the 40s orginally concerning labeling of fur products for allergic reactions that in the 70s morphed into a large selection of products made out of anything that involves fibers and fabrics to inform the consumer about what fabrics are used in the making of an item and how to properly care for the product.

Are FTC labels required on products for adults, or is this another label for products for kids under 12?

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

The FTC label is required on all fiber and fabric items regards of the age of the use unless the final product is on the FTC exempt list.

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Thank you JewelrydesignsbyME!
You are helping us all make sense of what we are wading through with this volume of new and re-updated rules for the rural artist/handcrafter. This Studio has seriously been taking notes and labels are now more nessa in our products future, than the casual hang tag of the business.
Thanks again!

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Okay. Questions, bc as we all know, knowledge only leads to more questions . . .

where do we affix these labels? My product is not washable, but I'm assuming the label would need to be washable for washable items.

I'm trying to think if where I might stick a label on my tutus . . . Good times.

Any help on the where and the how?

Also, can we use 100% nylon in children's attire these days?

Re: CPSIA labels AND FTC labels?????

Everything made for children under 12 needs to be labeled with the CPSIA label requirements, also some items may also need FTC labels as well. Unless the item is too small to be labeled (in that case all info. would have to be put on a hang tag) it all needs labels. Read the CPSIA and FTC websites for more info. on labeling requirements. Also, if the lablel gets int he way of the function of the item (like a reversible hat) then a hang tag may be used.
