As business owners, we all have the responsibility to know the CPSIA law and to judge how it affects the products we, as individuals, make and sell. And then take measures to correct our products.

By going to the CPSC website, opening the Guidelines, everything we need to know is pretty much explained.
http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/cpsiasbguide.html

I used CONTROL and click on this link to open it. Not sure if you will need to.

If you click the various parts, you can get answers. If we don't take the time to read it, know what is in it, and then write letters to Congress, the media, etc., the letters will appear to contain false information and will be ignored.

I am still seeing questions, statements in threads that are not true. If sellers will only read through this Guideline, we will become a much more informed group. An informed group will have a better chance of getting changes to this law passed.

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

Okay. I read the guidelines a little more closely. It's helpful to read them.

I'm printing out the handbook so I have the guidelines handy.

Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the link! I wish the CPSIA had come up with this guideline from the beginning, it really would have stopped some of the rumors!

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

Does anyone know about the pthalates? Because while the stay clearly states that they will not be pursuing the lead content on items it also states that the amount of pthalates must meet a certain criteria. Anyone know?
We had baby quilts, amigurumi and hacky sacks that would be for kids. Clarity would be wonderful!:)

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

PinkLizzyfromAus, natural fabrics are ok to send to the US. It's best not to sell items with buttons, zippers and synthetic fabrics, unless tested.

There is another thread at the moment with this informative link:

http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/smbus/cpsiasbguide.html

I copied and pasted an extract from this article which may be helpful:

Table B - These materials or components can be used (separately or
in combination) and sold (provided they have not been treated or altered
or undergone any processing that could result in the addition of lead):

Wood
Other natural materials including coral, amber, feathers, fur, and untreated leather
Yarn, dyed or undyed
Dyed or undyed textiles (cotton, wool, hemp, nylon, etc.), including children’s fabric products, such as baby blankets, and non-metallic thread and trim. This does not include products that have rhinestones or other ornaments that may contain lead or that have fasteners with possible lead content (such as buttons, metal snaps, zippers or grommets).
Children’s books printed after 1985 that are conventionally printed and intended to be read, as opposed to used for play
Certain educational materials, such as chemistry sets
Precious gemstones: diamond, ruby, sapphire or emeralds
Semiprecious stones provided that the mineral or material is not based on lead and is not associated with any mineral based on lead
Natural or cultured pearls
Surgical steel
Gold, of at least 10 karats
Silver, at least 925/1000 pure
Platinum, palladium, rhodium, osmium, iridium, and ruthenium

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

Thank you so much for this link, up until now I had be very confused by all of the CPSIA guidelines I'd seen, especially because they weren't exactly written for the everyday person to be able to understand! This guide seems to be written in common language for the most part and clearly spells out most everything. I am also glad to finally understand what things are currently allowed to be used or sold without risk of penalty from the commission.

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

I am a Canadian company that is dumfounded by this!
This makes absolutely no sense to me why if you have certificates from the companies that say make the metal clip that I use on a soother holder why that wouldn't be sufficient enough but no I would then have to send it once I sew the ribbon onto it to have the ribbon, the thread and the clip tested so that it includes the complete finished product. Why? There is no lead in the ribbon or thread for gods sakes!
So now I can't sell into the US?
Am I understanding this properly?

Re: CPSIA: The Guidelines - Please Read Them

Yes there are a lot of sketchy blog and forum posts about this. First it is not for products for children UNDER the age of 12. It is for children 12 and UNDER, which is in reality under 13.

Perhaps sketchy posts occured from Dec. on because it has been only is the last very few weeks that we have actually been given some real guidelines. We have been getting sketchy respones from the people that actually wrote this Dammmn law, and from our idiot representatives that signed it without reading it, and out Idiot Senators that also signed it without reading it. Also from the CPSIA that were given this idiot law to implement without the ability to change the Idiotic verbage that used terms like "all". That's like saying "it depends on what the meaning of is is."
