CPSIA Exempts Yarn

I just got this e-mail from the Yarn Market Industry.

CPSIA Exempts Yarn

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has just exempted yarn from the rigorous lead testing and certification requirements required for children’s products under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This is very good news indeed for the hand-knitting industry, which was worried about the implications widespread testing would have had on the manufacturer, all the way down the distribution chain.

For more on this ruling, go to www.apparelnews.net/news/manufacturing.

Read the October YMN for much more on this breaking story.

Re: CPSIA Exempts Yarn

I'm keeping my baby dresses out of my shop for now,,,I've got 15 of them, all unique and very pretty...But, until we know what the final decision will be, they're in hiding.
Seems the law changes everyday.

I know what you mean babynest - I've got my kids hats up still, but I've held off designing any more until they figure out what they are doing!

babynest, it's so true - it's such a rollercoaster when you have so much invested. I really feel for those whose entire business is based around items that are affected!

Re: CPSIA Exempts Yarn

If you're asking about the ruling that was issued a few days ago, it's a final rule, meaning final, exempt, no testing. So yarn and other textiles as listed in the ruling are exempt unless something is done in the processing to materially change them so that they are very different from the ruling.

Re: CPSIA Exempts Yarn

Note that you still must label AND that while the yarn (and other textiles as noted in the final rule) are exempt and not buttons, snaps, zippers, etc. on your product.

Thanks Buggalove, Buttons, etc. sure do make a difference, I still can't figure out how they are imagining children will keep their clothes on. I don't know too many 12 yo boys with elastic waist pull on jeans!!

Re: CPSIA Exempts Yarn

That is good to know,
but you still will have to make an individual label for each item with the information of where it was made & where the yarn came from - right?

Do you mean for each finished item, or do you mean each component? Each finished item (each stuffed doll} needs a label, yes.
