Buttons?

ok so if i knit or crochet a item of yarn I am good, but what the heck am i supposed to use for buttons or what not. I know wood is ok plain not painted or treated. But other than chopping down the trees around my house to make "safe" buttons.. (other than splinters LOL) what do you guys use? Any thoughts would be really helpful.. thanks

Re: Buttons?

humm i never did the knotty like frog type closure before in my many years of crafting... i bet if i look up instructions i might be able to do it. I wonder if i can crochet or knit a ball and use it as a round button. that might pose a choking hazard though, they have to be big.. man this stinks.

Re: Buttons?

I'm sure you can find wooden buttons at a fabric store and they are safe to use.

Re: Buttons?

Have you thought about using beads instead of wood buttons? There are tons of handmade beads on etsy, but you would want to check with the seller who makes them to see if they can be washed.

Re: Buttons?

Well I want to make sure 100 percent there is no lead. I think if I bought wood button in the store they have finish on them.. there for making it a altered wood right? Is beads exempt from the testing?

I googled "crocheted buttons" the other day and came up with a ton of sites, also someone posted a link on another thread, www.purlsoho.com I think, that has felt buttons.

I wish you luck! I'm in the UK and two of my suppliers have dried up being able to supply me with 20mm round wooden buttons for my dog coats. I spent an hour on the internet looking again (about tenth search) and no joy! It's ridiculous. I currently have three dog coats ready for buttons and can't find any.

Re: Buttons?

You could use coconut buttons but they are usually dark brown.

I thought from reading a lot of these threads that the only ones that showed lead was the pearlized kind. There is a blog where she tested things and that was one of them. I'll try and find it.

How about a yo yo? They have those little kits by Clover and you can make tiny ones that might work.

Re: Buttons?

There are some very cool, vintage buttons around. I sold 5 of them just the other day, to someone who will use them on a felted purse. I am sure I will see them on Etsy again! They were beautiful and I can just see them attached to a crocheted or knitted item. Many of them are made of resin, some of wood. You might want to try those.

Re: Buttons?

I've managed to find a few natural wood buttons here in the UK, but like blueshed said, they're hard to find. Everyone's sold out.

Re: Buttons?

I think any vintage button you might use would have to be tested first.

Here is an Etsy seller who sells wooden buttons:

Re: Buttons?

Wool and More...for your little pouches with the buttons, what if you knit or crocheted a single "bobble" when you got to the place where the button would go? A bobble would be part of the piece and therefore would not be a choking hazard.

Re: Buttons?

Couldn't you make a bobble as suggested above but then insert something in the bobble when you felt it? Just secure the bobble around an untreated wood sphere or even a small pebble and then sew it on. The wool will felt around the object and create a sturdy button. Sometimes the crocheted buttons are a little flimsy and you want something secure.

Re: Buttons?

Wool and more: I looked at your shop and didn't see any children's items. Can't you use normal buttons for your stuff? I thought the law related only to items sold for kids...
