Batch Information

Hi All,

I'm in the process of adding children's crochet hats to my Etsy shop. I'm a little confused if I need a batch number on my CPSIA labels.

Most of my items are made to order, and I keep a ton of different yarn in stock, that I purchase at different times, and use as needed. Do I need to know exactly which skein of yarn I use on each item? Or are batch numbers not relevant to me?

I keep receipts and an inventory log, however if I buy 10 skeins of blue yarn it is all mixed in together, and I just grab whatever is on top. It could have been the newest purchase, or the oldest. Do I need to start marking the yarn with specific dates, and then match them to a batch number on the label?

Thanks,
Erin

Re: Batch Information

Yarn is exempt from testing, so one skein is the same as another skein, since you they don't contain lead.

batch numbers are only useful if you make exactly the same item that is using supplies that need to be tested. For example, you need to make 100 red and white hairbows for a dance studio. Your metal clips have been tested, but you are using two different bags of clips from two different sources. On your CPSIA tracking tag, you could designate one group and A and the other group as B as a letter added to your date code. If there turns out to be a problem with group A and not group B, you would know how many may have that problem, and can address the issue with the dance studio.

Re: Batch Information

Answered my question I was coming to ask!! LOL I make lots of OOAK layered hair bows... but I use the same supplier for my clips.. I am still assigning a number to each bow.. i.e.. BBLY-01 BBLY-02 etc... I am also putting disclaimers on those that may have small parts... some have resins (tested).. I do double secured my centers.. I drill holes and sew them on with upholstery thread that has been doubled and tested for strength as well as glue them on... disclaimer is for children over 6.. do not make bows less than 2.5 wide... took all my bitty baby stuff off my site..who would believe a disclaimer of ( not for children under the age of 3) ?? Losing tons of time and money.. but will re-source the ribbons and clips... so hopefully want lose too much...

Re: Batch Information

Thanks so much Beverly!!

I knew that yarn was exempt, but didn't know that meant I didn't have to track it. That made my job a lot easier. I just bought printable cotton for my labels, so I should be all set.

Re: Batch Information

Also, does anyone know if the iron on cotton labels are exempt? I'm thinking probably not because they must have some sort of glue on them. It would just be a lot easier than sewing the labels on.

Re: Batch Information

Hey Erin,

I am using similar cotton adhesive labels. I found this info on adhesives:http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/frnotices/fr09/leaddeterminationsfinalrule-draft.pdf look down at page 19. It seems that in most cases, the adhesive is considered inaccessible to children, so it is okay.

I fold over the labels (so they are glued to themselves) and sew in the edge (they stick out from the product's seam). Maybe you would still want to sew them on because the adhesive might not be strong enough to be considered "permanently attached" I'm not sure.

Re: Batch Information

Thanks Rachel, I didn't actually get the adhesive ones this time, just the one's I have to sew in. I just thought it would be a lot easier to iron them on quickly, but on my hats its probably better to stitch them on.
