Back from DC!!!

First of all, thanks to all of you for your encouraging words, prayer and support! I really felt it when I was getting ready to speak, and it helped me be a little less nervous!

It was especially nice to meet Laurel of Lucy's Pocket! Etsians sure are wonderful people! :D

We went down a day early (DH, Bro, 2 year old son) so I could drop off copies of my testimony and see the sights of DC.

I barely slept Wednesday night because I was pretty nervous. I didn't get to put my thoughts into bullet points like I wanted to do before the meeting, and was not comfortable about that... My little brother just kept telling me that I was "going to talk to some people about some stuff." and that helped a little bit!

Before the meeting started, I talked to a lot of people, like people from the textile industry lobbying group, different people on the committee's aides, other witnesses, etc. It was a little overwhelming!

The coolest was when we got to meet Nancy Nord, the acting chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. She has really been a champion for small business in all of this, and is totally getting hit from all sides. She was given an impossible task and has done really well with it. Laurel and I told her how much small business people like us really appreciate her fighting for us, and she seemed to almost tear up and said that she doesn't hear any bit of appreciation in her job lately. It was a neat moment.

Nancy Nord testified first, and then the hearing went into recess so that the members could go vote. The have underground tunnels to the capitol so they can get over there quickly. It took about an hour and a half and we were up!

I felt I stumbled a bit, but I felt pretty good about it, and I felt especially good about the q&a at the end.

The best part of the hearing was that no matter what side of the aisle the members were on, they were all in agreement that something needs to be done. And that they want to work together to make it happen.

The one thing that I took away from this experience was that although we see on TV all the time these polarizing politicians that seem to be so acidic and make it seem impossible for this country to ever move forward on issues that divide us, the real work is done by people like these politicians who aren't on the Sunday news circuit every week blasting the other side. There was a real bi-partisan feel, and it really gave me hope that this law can be amended to keep it from destroying small businesses across the country.

Although I've just read Rep Altmire's press release about the hearing, and it's really nothing like what I thought took place at the meeting. I'm really hoping that he's just doing that for show but will work on this. The evidence is just so overwhelming that this law is flawed! And now it's out in the open...

It was an awesome trip, and I am so happy I had the opportunity to represent my business as well as other small businesses. The subcommittee chair promised more hearings, (fingers crossed) and I'm really looking forward to this law finally changing!

Re: Back from DC!!!

You did a great job. I watched the You Tube video of the hearing and saw and heard both you and Lucyspockets. Wonderful - both of you!

I was floored when I read Altmire's press release! This certainly was not what I heard being said by him and the other Congressional panel members. There is another thread right now discussing this so I will not repeat more of my dismay or speculations!

You did great! No one could have done any better!

Starbright......I'm so glad you had a chance to speak with Nancy Nord. It breaks my heart to hear that she teared up. She's a real human-being with a heart and she's had a really tough time.

I'm glad you had a chance to do some site-seeing.

Re: Back from DC!!!

Wow, what a champ! I'm very proud of you. As for the press release, just goes to show you can't trust the media. My dad was on the city commission for 18 years while I was a kid, and he would often call us over to see what the paper said, then tell us what really happened.

Re: Back from DC!!!

Thanks for the link quirkybags--I really liked this line:

"small businesses... the ways in which the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is implementing this law could force them out of business, without actually improving child safety."

The most important point that all the folks pushing for the law to stay as it exist don't seem to get. The ways in which this law will not actually improve safety and only serve to put small businesses out of the industry...

Re: Back from DC!!!

Starbright -- you and LucysPocket did AWESOME! And I'm glad to hear that you two were able to express appreciation to Ms. Nord for us all. She's been getting totally beaten up over this.

I read the press releases and was disheartened a bit; from the bits and pieces of the hearing I've been able to watch, I didn't get that sense at all. I hope you're right and it's just posturing while he's working behind the scenes to get the Act fixed.

Again (I can't say it enough) -- great job!

Re: Back from DC!!!

thanks so much for posting -- it's great to hear it from real people and not a press release! (Although it makes me feel like sending Nancy Nord a thank you card) Thank you for all you've done.

Good on you, StarbrightBaby!

And thank you for giving us that hopeful "behind the scenes" information. I'm not giving up, and I don't think we should either :-)

Re: Back from DC!!!

CopperLeaf, that's not a bad idea. Would something like that be sent to the CPSC "main office?"

Contacting Nancy Nord:

http://www.cpsc.gov/about/contact.html

You could probably mail something (maybe a handmade card, hee hee) to their office or use their email contact link for her further down the page.

I haven't read this thread yet but definitely will.

Starbrightbaby, isn't Washington DC something special. Not at all like I expected it. How about you?

Re: Back from DC!!!

I just finished watching the whole hearing, not boring at all, it was very interesting to see those affected and those listening to the detailed negative experiences. I think it looks promising, in that the committee seemed to understand the impact and how far reaching it will be, big and small.

Great Job StarBrightBaby!

Re: Back from DC!!!

I think it's a wonderful idea to send Ms. Nord some thank you notes (handmade, of course... LOL)

She said she really doesn't ever hear that at all, and I think it would mean a lot to her. I am going to send her one Monday AM.

Thanks again for all your support!
