I couldn't agree more, SugarAndSpice and baparsell. Good, decent, hardworking business people who aren't harming children or anyone shouldn't have to be looking over their shoulders for fear of fines or arrest. I'm just hoping that there will continue to be lobbying and civil disobedience against this law. This may eventually result in it being repealed or changed drastically--I hope!
Don't get me wrong, I realize in the immediate future this law is going to be hell and people are going to be scared out of business. That really stinks. I just hope that enough are able to fight and carry on and get it changed.
Perhaps the laws should be written so that people are required to declare what is in their product, attesting to its known safety, and consumers can use that knowledge to decide for themselves. Certain materials, like wood, and simple fabrics should be excluded. That way, the justice department, or whoever it is who enforces this stuff can use their time more efficiently, going after the people who are misrepresenting their products in a dangerous way.
Seems to me, if the law stays as it is, they're going to waste so much time going after decent people, that it will harm their ability to catch the real offenders--mostly Chinese (nothing against the good Chinese manufacturers) and maybe a very few careless or unscrupulous Americans.
