Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

When posting items to my IndieMade then pushing them to Etsy, there are always extra line breaks in the body of the Etsy listing that I must manually remove. Anyone know of a way to prevent this?

Also, is it possible to add a "Subscribe" button to your IndieMade blog?

Thanks!

Sharon, I've had the same thing happen and it's really frustrating, isn't it? I have to go in and remove the extra line breaks, and fix other formatting glitches.

I've contacted IndieMade about this but they said they have not experienced this problem before. Hmmm, could it be that you and I are the only ones who are having this problem? I doubt it! Lol!

Gloria, I did finally contact IndieMade directly and was told it is a new glitch that they are working on. Maybe they didn't notice it until we brought it up!

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

Sharon and others -- I just got an email from IndieMade with the following:

"This morning the dev team rolled out a new release, which includes fixes to the issues you addressed here. In particular, the system no longer adds a blank paragraph between lines on import, and it no longer pushes new products to Etsy if they are created as part of a CSV import."

Yay! I really appreciate that they actually listen and take action!!! Go IndieMade!

By the way, I also asked them how IndieMade promotes its users--other than a single page of a sampling of shops on their own promo page.

I asked if it would be possible to perhaps put a drop-down menu on each shop's site where people could search for different types of shops within the IndieMade artist community. It would be nice if we could give each other a promotional boost that way, don't you think?

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

Hi all! Here's a reply I got from IndieMade about 2 questions I asked. One was about creating a way to coordinate listings between Etsy and IM so we wouldn't have to chase back and forth deleting products that sold or entering new listings twice. The second was about my suggestion to create a drop-down menu so we could find other shops on IndieMade, similar to the way it is on Etsy.

1. "You guessed right on why the link from Etsy to IndieMade isn't automated: Etsy forbids it. We are not allowed to use their API -- that's the mechanism that our servers use to talk to theirs -- to bypass in any way the Etsy checkout process, because if we did Etsy would lose their transaction fees. Pulling products from Etsy and putting them in the IndieMade store directly is just not allowed, so we don't do it. Instead, the best way to move forward is to create the product over in IndieMade and then "push" it to Etsy."

2. "I understand what you're saying about finding other IndieMade sites. However, IndieMade simply isn't a marketplace -- it's a website hosting platform. Our focus is on making a great website that can serve as a home online for an artist. Some of our customers don't WANT to make it easy to find other artists doing similar things; if they went to the trouble of finding the customer in the first place, they don't want to possibly lose that customer to a competitor! :-)

So there it is. My solution to the first problem about sold listings on Etsy is just to immediately go to IM and delete that listing (I sell OOAK only). I suppose if you sell multiples, you would need to go to IM and manually decrease the number remaining each time you get a sale. I originally imported all of my Etsy listings via the Etsy CVS file, but now I guess I need to manually copy and paste each new item I list, or list it on IM first and then "push" it to Etsy.

I've been on IM for almost a month and haven't had any sales, but I'm getting more views there than on Etsy, so hoping sales kick in soon. Will try to keep you updated! :-)

It's really too bad they can't create a link to other artists. As an "energy practitioner" I understand that this attitude creates a feeling of "lack" rather than "abundance" and this holds everyone back from enjoying more sales. My motto is "I help you, you help me, and together we all thrive!"

Sorry, should have said CSV file (not CVS). You can find it -->shop settings-->>options-->>download data.

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

Thanks for the info, Gloria. I do wish there was a way to copy a listing in IM. I find Etsy so much easier for posting similar items (mugs, plates, etc) just because I can copy a listing and change it just a bit as opposed to having to copy/paste in IM. I do find it challenging trying to keep up 2 sets of the same shop, but I'll be sticking with both sites for awhile because I believe IndieMade is dedicated to artists and helping them showcase their work. Looking forward to the future!

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

Actually, there might be an easier way to post your items to IndieMade. Here's what I found out today - quoted from IndieMade's technical support:

"However, what you CAN do is edit the file you get from Etsy, for example if you add ten products, you can download your store, then remove all but those ten rows from the spreadsheet before importing. It's a bit of a headache, it's true -- but it's all we can do consistent with Etsy's terms of service. Sorry."

Just something to keep in mind. I'm going to try doing that soon and see what happens.

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

I will just have to try that, Gloria, next time I'm posting similar multiples of a product. I had wondered if something like that was possible. Thanks for letting me know!

Re: Extra line breaks in Etsy draft listings

Hi guys, just an fyi, we are strongly considering adding a market/directory of IndieMade websites. Customers would be able to select whether or not they are listed in the directory. Here's a post I did for Rena Tom a while back: http://blog.renatom.net/2013/05/13/put-etsy-in-its-place-build-your-business-everywhere/
