How much is too little to invoice?

My deal is going live on Saturday :) So, my question is, how much is too little to invoice? It looks like there are some cases where if a buyer purchases a certain amount, they will go over the voucher amount as little as $0.25. Do I invoice the buyer for that amount? Or is that tacky?

I'm not sure what to do in those cases.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

Anything less than a 1.00, I would recommend charging a customer IMHO.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

when I buy an item I always expect to be invoiced for the remaining balance, no matter how small the value

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

paypal takes 30 cents of each transaction so when you invoice for small amounts paypal will take their cut out of what the buyer pays. so it's not very beneficial to do that for the example of 25 cents. I didn't bother invoicing for amounts under $1.00.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

And crap, I didn't figure in the extra $0.30 per transaction fee for the invoice when I was figuring out numbers. Back to the spreadsheet and reworking it tonight.

Ooh poopers!

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

it's an easy one to forget because you are used to it with being in regular transactions. It doesn't really put much of a dent into a $20 purchase but it is more significant into a $1

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

Clearly I didn't pay attention because the .30 invoice fee completely escaped me! If you don't use the invoice and just request money, is there a separate fee for that as well?

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I invoiced (requested money) for $1 upwards. I had one for 50 cents and figured paypal would keep 35 or so out of it so couldn't be bothered...

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

Honestly I was so crazy busy I didn't bother unless it was $2 or more. And actually, there are people who purchased from me who still have a remaining balance on their voucher of $1 or 50 cents. I doubt they'll come back to redeem that. If they do of course that's fine, but I doubt they will. It all kind of evens out I think.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I don't invoice for less than a few dollars in my shop...by the time I add up the transaction fee, percentage, labor to send the invoice, and additional labor when it comes time to do my bookkeeping and taxes, it's just not worth it *for me*.

As a buyer, I wouldn't find it tacky however. If I go over, I expect to be billed for the extra - I'm already getting a bargain, after all! I wouldn't find it tacky to be billed for a dollar.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about a minimum amount to bill.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I recently made a purchase that was only 45 cents over (I felt yucky doing it, but I was gift buying) and didn't get invoiced. If I were to send the seller the 45 cents via paypal, would she still get hit with the fees? If so, I plan to send an adjusted amount so that after fees she would still get the 45 cents.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I actually had a 25 cent balance from my Heartsy order yesterday and I haven't received an invoice. I can't imagine sending an invoice for 25 cents, I mean with Paypal fees being taken out, what is the point really?

Good luck on your feature!!! :]

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

It doesn't cost you to send an invoice or money request but there are paypal the usual transaction fees, when the buyer pays for the money request or invoice, which is 30 cents plus a percentage of the dollar amount. Not sure if there are when you select services instead of goods.

yes, 30 cents plus a percentage free. I think in order to get around it you have to send the money and mark it is a personal gift. even then I am not sure if they take fees out or not.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

When I did my feature, I had quite a few go over by $.20 - $1. I only invoiced if it was over $1. Like someone said earlier, once I accounted for fees and my time and the extra organization, it just wasn't worth it.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

You all make really good points. I think I'm only going to bill if it's over $1.00. On one of my vouchers that I bought, I went over $0.50 and I asked the seller to go ahead and bill me the $0.50 and they didn't. Now I know why :)

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I got billed for .20 by two different shops. I paid it but I thought it was silly to have been billed. Sometimes you just have to let things go and hope it works out in the end. I undercharged on my shipping at the start until I released I was charged sales tax on the postage amount......do you pay tax on postage in the US?

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

LOL! I guess those sellers didn't realize each of those invoices cost them money. I live in a no sales tax state so I don't know about the shipping question.

Re: How much is too little to invoice?

I invoiced for .50, but not below. I did this because even with the .30 fee and the penny or two taken out it would at least cover the cost of delivery confirmation (.19) through PayPal shipping. I debated back and forth but decided that every little bit would help toward the bottom line.
