I think I posted this wrong before so I will try again Wow, I just got an awakening. Can a few fellow Virginians tell me how they handle this issue? I just started my Etsy shop last year. I thought I was doing the right thing by getting a local business license and state tax id for which I have to file that stupid st9 every month even though I rarely had a sale. I have had a move and some family issues in the interim and have not been able to do a lot with the shop, but I had 2 sales, for which I did pay the sales tax and will figure out how to do the income tax, but I was totally blind-sided by this Return of Business Tangible Personal Property that was sent to me by the county. It says I am to list everything I own that is used or could be used for the business so that they can assess a tax (3.6% of value) even if it is an item I bought personally years ago with no intention of starting a business and no intention of making it owned by my business - it's mine. Even items rented or borrowed. I guess minimally I use my computer and a sewing machine, but potentially anything in my house could be used in the business, right? -- washing machine, every tables, every chair, etc. I am already at a loss in the business with supplies which I fully expected for a while, but property taxes on everything I own, whether I made money with it or not? Surely, everyone else is dealing with this too, but how?

I am just putting some feelers out to see if we have some Southwest Virginia Etsy makers and sellers out here? I searched but couldn't find a specific team, if you know of one let me know, or we can start one and grow our SWVA maker community, share shows, opportunities, etc?

Hi everyone! I used to be somewhat active, then life took over as my littles became teenagers and all the chaos that entailed. One thing that I determined I needed to do was clear out stash - fabric, patterns, you name it, if it hasn't been used or has been piling up, I'm finding a use for it. To that end, I started trying to use up all my fabric scraps instead of either hoarding them or tossing them. What that ended up being is the creation of travel tissue packs and wristlet keychains from the fabric that was left over after making reusable grocery bags and zippered pouches!! Still mostly work with fabric creating all kinds of stuff, and have added stuffed bears from fabric that I upcycled/recycled. Trying to figure out how to better promote my shop and get more sales - the uncut patterns seem to be selling better than anything else {sigh}
