second class royal mail compensation

Hi all,
Yesterday I posted my first order with Royal Mail second class. I thought that you can get a compensation up to £46 but I was told that it is only for certificates and stuff like this but not for items. The employee was a bit rude and I didn't insist.
Below you can read what they say in their website.
Has anyone ever claim for a compensation?

Thank you for your help!
Vicky.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Compensation
For items posted with Royal Mail which have no intrinsic value, or where a customer cannot provide evidence of posting, there will be compensation for loss, damage and delay of a minimum of 6 x 1st class stamps at the first weight step. In the event of a compensation claim for loss we will refund the postage paid or 6 x 1st class stamps at the first weight step, whichever is greater.

For lost or damaged items that have an intrinsic value, with proof of posting with Royal Mail (such as a certificate of posting) and proof of value (such as an invoice or receipt) customers will be entitled to a postage refund plus compensation for actual loss up to the value of the item, or £46, whichever is the lowest.

Re: second class royal mail compensation

Victoria, I have never made a claim but what I think this means is that Royal Mail will compensate for any loss as long as you have a proof of posting receipt and have an invoice proving the value of the item (up to a value of £46). So your Etsy invoice is your proof of value.
Any parcel worth more than £46 should be mailed using a tracked service to get the correct level of insurance. This applies to first class and overseas mail too.
