square or paypal here?

Hi there,

We're thinking about doing our first craft fair in the next few months and we were wondering if anyone had any issues or preferences for accepting cards etc at fairs. Should we go with square or paypal here?

Thanks,

Rosemary+Robin

Re: square or paypal here?

I use Paypal, mainly cause it's one less account to manage.

@Molly Good to hear, we're leaning towards Square, but we've a little concerned about their lack of customer support.

Re: square or paypal here?

We love square. Never had any issues nor had to contact support. The biggest issues I've heard of is just the reader breaking. A lot of sellers have two. You get a free one from them and you can just buy another online or in stores.

My favorite part is that they automatically transfer the money into my account!

Re: square or paypal here?

I used the square at three craft shows and my sales definitely went up. Without the credit card option people would smile, ask me if I was online, take my card and I felt I would lose a sale. Get a square...easy and fun.

Re: square or paypal here?

Was about to post the same thing, Rosemary & Robin. I'd like to do Paypal rather than have something directly linked to my bank account, but haven't heard much feedback about Paypal Here yet.

Re: square or paypal here?

I think we're really leaning towards Square at this point. Really happy to hear from everyone though. It would also be good to hear negatives!

Re: square or paypal here?

I actually don't know anyone who's used paypal at shows, but I've used square and have friends who have and well all love it. I have heard support is shady, but the only story I've heard of anyone needing it, they actually did get help right away. I highly recommend!

I love Square. I hook it up to my iPad at shows. Their rates are great and it is simple to use. I really love the fact that they put the money into my account quickly.

Re: square or paypal here?

Get them both- they're free and it's never a bad thing to have a backup. I used to use Square and had some trouble with the card reader when it was over 95 degrees. You can always do it manually, but there's a per use fee and a higher % they take.

Paypal just dumps into my account and it's all right there for the Outright accounting software- and people have heard of Paypal so they're less likely to refute the charge : it shows up on the credit card bill as from Paypal or Square, not your shop, just as an FYI

Re: square or paypal here?

I've used Square with positive results. Not sure about the difference now but when I last checked, Square was a little bit cheaper.

Re: square or paypal here?

Many use Square these days but if you check with your bank, your business banking package may include credit card processing.

I prefer Square. I heard of folks having problems with PayPal not consistently picking up the swipe.

Re: square or paypal here?

I have a square, I plan on using it in this spring when my gram and I have a yard sale. I really wanna do the First Friday art walk too in portland, maine - I think having the square will be a lot easier and seeing most people now a days rarely carry money with them sale will go up ( at least I hope)

Re: square or paypal here?

I use the PayPal Here reader. It was free and I also signed up for the PayPal business debit card, so once funds are deposited into my PayPal account, I can use them immediately with my PayPal card. I don't have to wait to have my funds transferred to my bank account. The fees are almost identical--the square charges 2.75% of each transaction and PayPal charges 2.7%.

Re: square or paypal here?

I use square. Granted I haven't had need to use it often, but it has worked well when I needed it. It's simple to set up and use. I've never required support for the square.

I can't compare with paypal as I don't have theirs.

Re: square or paypal here?

I’ve used the Square for a United Way Charity Event, so basically I had my scarves set out on a table for a few hours. I was very pleased I had it. I saw it used at a group show a few week earlier with an I pad, but I used my smart phone.
At the group show the alternating cashiers had trouble swiping the card so I spent some time practicing at home before the event. They even have an online tutorial to practice swiping, which I found very helpful. I got the Square kit two days before the show and on the day before the show I spent a few hours getting familiar with it. I made print out copies of how to void a transaction, giving a partial refund, etc. It was funny because the clients thought I was an old pro at taking credit cards.
The kit included a vinyl sticker showing images of the credit cards accepted and I put that on the cover of the notebook with the print out. A customer stopped in mid sentence asking if I take credit cards when she saw the signage.

Disadvantages.
It’s not sent up to take mailing address if you wanted to collect them. I had a guest book but there was so much activity at my table it just got covered with scarves. I did take phone numbers in case of potential problems.

Tips.
When using a smart phone It was difficult entering the buyers email address. But that’s the phone not Square.
If you could bring a helper perhaps have 2 squares. I was by myself and it took me between 7-10 minutes per transactions.
Which I wish was faster since people were waiting to pay. One even asked if I’d hold her stuff and she would come back to pay when it was less busy.
I don’t know if paypal would be faster or if they access or store mailing address.
Someone suggested bringing both incase one of them is down. Great idea!
Also it would have been nice to have access to the funds immediately with the PayPal debit card, but it wasn’t too long getting the funds from Square.
Also if using PayPal's system perhaps they would include seller protection.

For that evening all transactions went though Square except one was cash. From total sales 88% were credit card so I was thrilled I had the Square.
Good luck everyone.
