new etsy browse - who chooses the items?

I have just seen this new browse option with categories.
It looks nice actually and I hope it will bring more sales.

The question is for whom....

How do the shops get there? Is it some kind relevancy search? will they rotate? How does it work?

with relevancy search I have more or less figured things out. Now - how to get my items into these categories. Before the change they were there....

I was curious about the same thing. I've had a few hits from it today and found my items on several pages... that makes me think it's not a chosen thing... I doubt they would choose several of the same person's work.

From Etsy Help:

"First, each top-level browse page has its own landing page, featuring a selection of images and links. The items featured in the images are hand-picked by Etsy Admin in an effort to best represent the theme of their section. These images, as well as the sections they represent, will rotate periodically to stay seasonally relevant and fresh. At this time, we don’t have a timeline that we can share regarding how often these will change."

The rest is based on relevancy.

Also this new categories thing threw my relevancy out of whack. Ugh and just when I got the hang of SEO and relevancy and was getting better. Please Etsy, throw us a bone about how to get seen.

Weddings have been like this for a few months. It's seems to be on a rotation. I will gets lots of hits from it for a week and then none the next. For sure you need you tags and titles in check to be at the front I believe and for weddings it seems photo quality plays in as well, but don't quote me on that.

The top page is obviously hand picked, but the rest of it clearly is based on relevancy, because the pics are a mish-mash of the good, the bad, and the - well. :P

When I just posted a new listing I had 5 hits immediately via categories... So I'm guessing it's based on recency... UG!

This is an area that has always made me nervous. With the old way and the new. I don't fit nice and neat in the category options so it's hard for me to figure out where I am supposed to show up and if I really am showing up. The home/decor category looks lovely. And the wreath sub-category is well represented. Would my wreath bows fit in there, or will I find them somewhere else....? It's a little frustrating to not know for sure... Maybe I'm thinking it through too much?

We have "search", which is from the search bar.

We have the categories, which still show up at the bottom of the browse pages.

Then we have Browse, which are the new things up at the top of the page on the left hand side.

My hat on page two of the men's category is not new. it's been listed for, sold and relisted multiple times. The last being several weeks ago.

The new categories are called "browse".

If you are getting hits from "categories", that is not the new set up, that is the old set up (Under "More Ways to Shop").

Search is still search bar.

I browsed the jewellery section under the tag line personalisation. I browsed through 15 pages and didn't once see my personalised wood bangle. All the pieces were either silver hand stamped stuff or alphabet beads. :(

How often do customers actually just 'browse' and by browse I mean select the 'jewellery' section and just look at EVERYTHING? Because that is A LOT of items to simply browse through and most of it won't even be their style.

If I am looking on Etsy I tend to have a good idea of what I am looking for. Even if I have a vague idea there are at least a few factors that narrow down the page numbers. Just selecting one category and looking through EVERYTHING seems a bit time consumingly pointless..

ok, if the browse is according to relevancy, why when i do search for 'earrings' the results are different. same for other sections...

so if the way of making your item relevant in the search is different from the browse, how on earth can i make my items relevant for both.... uhh

I have been wondering the exact thing!

For me, the only hope I have is to be seen via the search bar. Which I have been getting lots of views this way. Up until today, I was relevant in many categories (Meaning I could find myself within the first 5 pages) now no dice. It is so frustrating.
